First of all, big hello from me... I'm new to the forum and this is my first post!!

My first question is one that has probably been asked a thousand times before.....

I have a 7inch wrist and although I think the 42mm and the 39.5 will both look good, just not sure which one to go for?

Any help deciding would be greatly recieved

Movement, age or just go for size??

Thanks

I’d say the 42mm would look good. I’ve a 7.25” wrist and 42mm fits me best. I recently started wearing an old Seiko diver at 39mm and it just feels so small these days. However, wear what YOU feel comfortable with.

If I can offer some simple advice- get them on your wrist.
The newer POs are taller than the older generations ( 2500's) which can be off putting to some, even if they are 42mm.

I’ve had the older 42mm PO and the newer 43.5mm PO. I would say that on my 6.75” fairly flat wrist the older 42mm PO wore much bigger - mainly because of the design of the bracelet end links. The 43.5 mm felt great for me.

I can’t speak for the 39.5mm version as I never managed to find an AD with one in stock and settled for 43.5. I suspect it would be perfect for me though.

Edit: I realise I worded the above really poorly. What I should have typed was: The 43.5mm PO wears smaller and better than the older 42mm PO. But the 39.5mm *may* be even better still.

So here are a few shots of a 42mm 8500 on a 7” wrist. I don’t think the Breitling bracelet affects height at all.

Thanks very much for the pictures, same size wrist as well perfect!!

Can I ask does the height of it ever bother you?

How long have owned this beauty?

Thanks

Haha, thanks for the reply.

I knew what you were talking about. I have tried on the 43.5 a few times, sometimes it felt ok and other times it just felt to chunky.

Hence the reason I'm now looking at the 42mm, interesting point you have made about the 43 fitting better though.

I really need to try one on

Thanks

Hi Happy, so I thought I’d said hello at the start, so hello. I’ve owned the watch for 3 1/2 years or so. It is worn in rotation so I’ve never had any issues day to day and don’t find it wobbles in anyway if fitted properly on the bracelet.
It’s quite a versatile watch to pair with leather, NATO or metal. I’m going to add the 3 stage comfort clasp to the original bracelet and remove the original as it provides 3 stages of micro adjustment which I think will make it even better. I suppose the newer 39 and 43.5 models have the micro clasp but I’m not certain on that.
Anyway welcome to the forum and happy (pun intended 😀 )hunting. I think it’s a great watch for the money they can be picked up for but I’m a sucker for a little colour on a dial which I think lifts the whole look of a watch.

42mm for me. When I free-dive over 600M, the extra weight help kept me down.
Next to DSotM, 44.25mm

Something to think on

After having a 2500 42mm PO, The height and stubby lugs were a turnoff. The 42 sat too high on my 6.5” wrist with stubby lugs. The 39.5 dial was tiny, sat high and stubby lugs.

that was coming from a 2500.

between the two.... 42mm

When I tried on the 43.5 it just felt a little to big/chunky,
But when I tried on the 39.5 it just felt a little to small!!

So thinking maybe the 42mm might be just right?

Why are these things so hard?

Just don't want buyer's remorse...

I felt the same way. The 43.5 felt way too chunky and I could never wear it with a dress shirt. The 39.5 dial was too small even though it could fit under my dress cuff. I think this is because the 39.5 is actually only 38mm and the remaining 1.5mm are from the case. The 42mm 8500 had good width but again was too chunky for me to wear.

Hi Happy and welcome to the OF!

Not long ago, I asked myself the same questions, also having a 7" wrist. Since I don't buy a new watch too often, I decided to make a list of priorities first, and look for the best match to my own needs later. So the first and most relevant question is: "what do I exactly need the watch for?" At first, it sounds obvious: to tell the time. But at a closer look we all have different life histories that result in different priorities.

As an example, my order of priorities are:
1. reliable accuracy
2. date function
3. reliable impermeability
4. readability of the display
5. lume
6. availability
7. rotating bezel
8. wearing comfort

After beeing clear about this, I started trying different versions on. In the place I work, there is an Omega Boutique with all current versions available. In my theory, I was leaning towards the 39.5 mm one, but after trying all possible candidates again and again, I found the 39.5 much less readable than the 43.5, and also the 43.5 was, to my surprise, MUCH smaller and more confortable than I expected. Since a reliable accuracy is prio 1 for me, I discarted the 42 mm, and since readability is a higher prio than comfort, there was only one wright choice left: 43.5mm.

So, on the same way I encourage you to take your time to do this cerebral work first, and then the answer should result really easy and long lasting satisfactory.

What is your list of priorities?

I hope it helps a little bit to make your hunt more satisfactory.

Happy hunt, Happy.

I watched a YouTube video, the timeless watch channel.

He said when he goes from wearing his 40mm up to his 44mm it feels ridiculously big. But after a few hours of wearing it, it feels normal. Then the same going back the other way.

I currently only own 1 watch, which is a 41mm

Is this kind of true when swapping from one to another?

I have a 7” wrist and I keep going back to 41-43mm, anything below 40 just looks small to me. But as most have said it really boils down to trying them on if possible.
The strap or bracelet plays a big role in how big it wears, I find the Bond (jubilee) style wraps a small wrist better than the Speedy style bracelet for example so I can wear a bigger watch better on a Bond style.
