I recently came across this at the AD in Waikiki. Wish I took pictures on the wrist but I forgot. What are the opinions on the 39.5mm ceramic Deep Black PO? ~14.5mm thick, 39.5mm diameter with the 8800 caliber. Very tempting considering the price to watch ratio. I think this is a great alternative to the 45.5mm ceramic Deep Black which is, as one commenter eloquently stated on Hodinkee, “EIGHTEEN. MILLIMETERS. THICK.” Stupidly thick, in case you didn’t get the connotation. Mahalo.

This is the challenge for Omega in the coming years. They need to re-engineer their movements to be thinner, somehow (in my opinion).

It's especially noticeable when you have domed sapphire front, display back, and extra case thickness for water resistance (like the PO line).

Since you're asking for it, my opinion is that it's still too thick. The smaller size will certainly help, but for $10,200 retail, too many other options to consider.

The only issue of the 8500/8900 against the 2500 is the thickness, then, absolutely every function, detail and corner is better in the 8500/8900.

The day Omega reduce the thicknesses oh the PO line in 2 millimeters, that day, the search for the perfect sport watch will end for many of us.

Basically if the new 42mm Seamaster 300m Pro size was made as a Seamaster PO 600m at 42mm and just over 13mm thick...I'd probably spend the extra money to upgrade to the PO.

It's not really the movements that result in the thickness problems with the current line of Omegas. For comparison the Cal. 2500 is 4.1 mm tall (thick) and the 8900 is only 5.5 mm - so 1.4 mm taller, yet the difference in the watches is much greater than that. Just for the sake of comparison the Rolex 3135 is 6.0 mm tall, so taller than the 8900 by 1/2 a mm and you don't hear too many people complain about how thick a sub is...

As your second sentence illustrates, the issues with thickness are mostly casing design, and a big one is having a sapphire display back. So it's case design that is the real culprit here, not the movements.

    Cheers, Al

A no date PO that's 42mm wide and no thicker than 13.5mm. Make it the next James Bond LE watch with no 007 markings on the front!

It’s got a 43mm diameter, but the new Longines full-ceramic Hydroconquest L3.784.4.56.9 looks nice, and at around $3500, it’s much less expensive. The 888 Calibre movement seems to be a re-worked 2892A2 that operates at 3.5hz—same as the coaxial, but with a Swiss lever design, and free-sprung balance. I think the power reserve is over 60hrs as well.

Hi Yelfel! I am also looking at this watch now as my next purchase although I did not hold it in my hand yet.
How about the contrast between the black case and the steel crowns? Does it look good? The bigger ceramic PO-s have ceramic crowns and a full ceramic bezel. A bit strange that they do not follow the same design...

Nice alternative to the larger version, but it has one less useful complication (the GMT). :(

Hey Meme! This model is whitout the GMT!
This has only time+date, 39.5 mm across, 14.5mm thick, ceramic case/bezel/dial. Check the pictures!

When they release a watch with BB58 dimensions (ie 40mm case & less than 12mm thick), I'll likely be a buyer...

I wonder what the OP did?

@bdg5593 congrats, it's a beautiful watch. Too pricey for me, unfortunately, right now.

@mjb My old college roommate works for an AD so he was able to get me 20% off on the watch with no tax so really 27.5% off.

I can ask my old college roommate for you. I could tell him that your old college roommate can't help you out.
