I realise the picture isn't the best but can anyone see any red flags with this dial? I can't see anything obvious, but been new to this I'm not confident enough to put my money where my mouth is........yet 😉

From that one picture I’d say the dial is original but it has some marks.
Crown is wrong.
Case has plenty of wear (and is it quite severely nibbled at 6?)

At least I'm making progress on finding untouched dials 👍
Should the crown be decagonal?

Yes

In addition the hands have been relumed and the seconds hand is too long.
The date is clicking over too early.

Second hand looks far too long, so I guess is a replacement, as could be the hr and min hand, as the lume looks to be a completely different colour to the dial lume

of course, these could be the original hands, but with newer lume

dial dates the watch to 1959-61 period

Is it possible the date clicking over is as a result of the watch been an hour away from midnight, or would the click over be nearer to the midnight hour?

How easy would it be, in terms of availability, to replace the hands with an appropriate set?

On top of what has already been said, to the above question, it obviously will need servicing

Are you thinking to buy this as you didn't mention the asking price?

Regardless of the price, though, overall it is unattractive to me as the dial, hands and case are poor as already mentioned above by others. For me, the first question you should ask yourself is "would I be happy to look at this in my wrist?". I feel that if you ask yourself that, you'll reconsider this watch.

Do you want a dog leg Constellation with a silver dial or are you just looking in general?

Good luck, Chris

Hi Chris,

I was keeping an eye on the watch in an auction with a view to possibly bringing it back to life if it went for sensible money.

As it is, the watch went for over £1k even with the issues it has, which was way too rich for me 🙁

Well, the bracelet may be worth £150 so it sounds like about £900 for the head. That would be far too much for me in that condition but it isn't easy to get into these.

If you want a good (not perfect but, attractive) pie-pan, dog leg Connie, without a bracelet but that is serviced and can be worn, my feeling would be that about £1500 would be a good amount to allocate. Anything below that is likely to have issues and need a service which is significant. That's my feeling anyway.

Good luck, Chris

As you are looking, you want to find one that the case and dial are in excellent condition BUT, needs service.
That will give you the best combination of
Watch + price.

Dog-leg Pie-Pan Constellations are quite dressy, imo. I have a pair (stainless and gold capped) in terrific condition; although I was estatic when I purchased them I find that I don't wear them often because they are very dressy (and I'm not...). Such a watch in less than excellent condition would be a downer.

Curiously, one of my favorite watch in my collection is a solid yellow gold Longines dress watch. It's more a prêt-à-porter watch than the Dog-leg Pie-Pan Constellation.
