16520 Patrizzi “Darth Vader” sells for $170K. Prices are still record breaking

The prices are crazy, but not nearly as crazy as the Geneva auction. It seems as though most lots did not reach the high estimate (some Rolexes and the Cartier Crash notwithstanding), while in Geneva the high estimate was often doubled or tripled.

Generally speaking the lots in Geneva are rarer while in HK they have a wider variety and selection

Maybe a dumb question - what made 16550 to go that high????

Understood, but run of the mill Rolexes still in production fetched outrageous prices that weren’t replicated here with similar pieces. And the other stainless steel modern watches didn’t pop to the same extent. I’m not comparing JCB’s watches to the watches put up in HK.

The even patina on the hands and dial.

Blackout 14270 brought 25K

Haha, makes me feel like building a timemachine and slapping myself 5 years ago for not buying one for 7k€ when I had the opportunity. ::facepalm1::

I don't generally gravitate towards "patina" but this is mesmerizing 🥰

Don't we all or imagine if your dad bought you a Submariner the day you were born.
My son was born in 2013, I texted my dealer (personal friend) from the delivery room and ordered my son a Hulk with the card in his name dated his Bday. Its still sitting new in the shipping coffin in my vault.

The even patina on the hands and dial.
Hands are whitish (except GMT) and dial is creamy ivory. Same, if not better examples could be found for much less.... Crazy market)

I agree! It’s not the best. However, the market for vintage seems crazy right now. It seems people are bidding on whatever they can get their hands on.

i only picked ones that I thought were quite high and strangely, all 5 digit references. As far as recent overall auction results, COVID19 seems to have had no Impact on price

I passed on a very good one (better case than above) for 22K

And, to some extent, the allure of a full set

it is positively hypnotic but $170K for a 90s watch is hard to wrap your head around. I predict more “Darth Vaders” will soon be coming on to the market

Don't forget, you also have a different audience of bidders. those modern rolexes that sold for crazy prices are one-off and IMO would only happen in a Geneva auction. Across all the auction houses, they generally achieve superlative results in Geneva compared to HK/LDN/NYC. Also timing plays a role as the Geneva auctions are first in the calendar year, not considering the Covid disruption. In Geneva, it was seen that the ultra-rich are not affected by the global situation, whereas in HK, even if you're filthy rich, generalizing here, you still have a sense of your money and what value you get.

nice thread, thanks for sharing 👍
the price for the 16520 is insane IMHO.
I am not an expert but I thought that the „Patrizzi“ has an inverted 6 dial. This one has a later.
HAGWE all

HAGWE all

inverted 6 is from 88-93 so a W serial would make this watch a ‘95 which has the correct MK 4 dial and also one of the few serials that is known to turn brown
