I already bought a vintage Speedmaster on eBay that was ruined by the “Authenticator” and had to be returned to the seller... ::facepalm1::

Wow, that's terrible! What a nightmare. Are you comfortable giving a little more detail, I'm curious about the process. I assume they are opening cases to check the movement.

Probably better to open a new thread not to divert from this eBay train wreck...

I'd love to see it restored, or at least in working condition. I enjoy seeing things like this come back to life.

at $2k... it was priced high, but one could think... parts, service... and maybe have a funky 321 at some reasonable price...
at $9k... someone must think there's a hidden gem there somewhere. ??

I think you have one group chasing the orange ‘ultraman’ hand (overlooking the fact it’s likely not long enough to be genuine) bidding against others who are after the blue dial (overlooking the fact that it’s severely damaged) forcing the price to unwarranted highs.

Or it’s just being shilled to hell.

It's a funny one.

In monetary terms it makes no sense at all. However, the romantic in me kind of understands it. I've bought many a watch in crap condition, that I wanted to restore to former glories, even when deep down I knew I'd have to throw a ton of money at it, to ultimately end up with a poor/average example at best. This can still be fun and it's sometimes nice to have a watch with an uncommon dial variant etc, that you're happy to wear as a beater.

Then again, it's one thing doing that with a £500 watch and sinking 800 quid into it. I wouldnt be dumping 10k on a wreck of a watch like this.

This one might be hard to resell at a decent price.

then i suppose one has to either wear it or resell It at an indecent price. 😀

of course it makes sense.... you buy a piece of junk for 10k, you only keep the orange hand that you can fit on your ultraman range correct 145.012-67. You take photos, send them to Omega and ask for an extract of archive and you receive it with a special mention that your speedy is equipped with an orange hand. Your 10k 145.012 is now worth 50k.... end of story

interesting huh ? I would not be surprised more ppl will bid..... let's see

Except it almost certainly isn’t an ultra man hand.

Cheaper just to buy an 861 Chrono hand and paint it orange

You just described my thought process when I buy an old car. It is so easy in your head to see it all shiny and fixed up. And think of all the fun it'll be doing it. Fun turns into "fun."

If that sells for that much, I’m taking a hammer to a few of mine, to increase their values.

(I’m betting it gets relisted.)
