Patina, a good or bad thing?

Hi all,

What are your thoughts on patina? I see a lot of people that love it, and a lot that hate it. I suspect more than anything it comes down to personal preference and what you want from your time piece. Personally I really like it and think it gives a look you just can't get on a modern piece. But,

What do you think? Is this too much?

This thread is a great idea; patina has never been discussed before. Looks like it is moldy.

Well there is patina and then there's patina. All depends on the definition of who is looking at it. The watch you pictured looks cool to me.

There’s ‘patina’ and then there’s a deteriorated watch.. that looks like it’s got mould.

I wouldn't wear it, so that patina is too much for me. To my eyes patina is way overrated.

There is patina, then patinated, then heavily patinated, then rotted, then fit for composting.

For me, a little patina is acceptable after that, nah. However, each to their own.

Hi, welcome to OF.

The topic on patina has been extensively discussed in the forum before. You can use the search function to find those threads.

As you can see from the responses so far, some will find it attractive and some wouldn't touch it with a 6 feet pole.
It is in the eye of the beholder.

To me, I don't find the dial attractive. But that's just me.

As others put it, if you are a seller...its patina. If you are the buyer...its damage.

Happy hunting!

My 2 Cents. If the patina is evenly spread, it is not about damages (so only coloring) and it fits the watch (hands, markers, style) and it is NOT artificial patina then I like it. In this case I would say “pass”.

this (haha my own) I like!

Bear in mind the OP's example is an extreme closeup. On the wrist it might be quite pleasing. I would wear it.

Funny, I managed to include one that is not mine. Somehow ended up in my library. But they are very close....

Agreed - possibly a slightly too good of a picture. At the end of the day patina is damage - from a distance I'm sure it's a completely different look.
