This comment reminded me about an interesting thing I learned recently. Italy has an elite Police Unit dedicated to identifying and recovering lost works of art: https://www.npr.org/sections/parall...oing-fight-against-pillage-of-priceless-works

They were recently seen in action repatriating this ancient piece of marble mosaic that was once a part of Caligula's love boat- recently found being used as a coffee table in a manhattan art dealers apartment:

I can wholeheartedly recommend The History Blog, which brings news such as this regularly. It was recommended elsewhere on OF last year or so, where I learned about it 😀

This must feel really good in the hand, like a pebble you want to skip across a pond.....

I would like to throw it in a pond for sure...

Actually if it were mine I'd start looking for a good condition case of the correct vintage, seeing as the watch looks quite good otherwise.......and I'd keep the old case to rub in my hand occasionally 😁

Thanks for that from me too. Hours of fascinating browsing there. The sealstone from Pylos is astounding.

Fascinating thread! Those poor, poor MkIIs! The case almost cries out to be polished, and oh my god people do! 😲

I would like to submit this bar of soap on eBay at the moment: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Omega-Au...374550?hash=item1c97a6c9d6:g:8lQAAOSwkLhaBsiQ. Sold by Collector_Investments, ironic.

Well, you have chosen to pick on the one Omega reference - the right honorable Omega Seamaster 166.067 - that actually is supposed to look like a bar of soap 😉

I have to say, and I don't say this lightly, that is a horrible reference. The bounds of your niche knowledge of Omega references never ceases to amaze!

You guys are rather harsh. You can plainly see he followed Omega's polishing instructions, as outlined in the refurbishment manual.

Yeah...we’re a weeee bit too harsh / just can’t help ourselves

Best post ever @cicindela (laughing to point of tears)

Would anyone dare to present an example of a polishing job they actually liked? With all that effort in the shops, someone must request it!

What in the world is going on with that caseback?? Is that actually the result of a polishing attempt? And is that really the point where they stopped and thought, yeah that's the look I was after, it's perfect!!

Agreed such a shame #muppet

There is another with the melted lugs / slippery case polishing technique, one that is a personal favorite. The long-produced 2505.

Looks like melted 😀

I would say that it isn't possible on a gold capped model. On either steel or solid gold it would be, but depending on how much metal that has been removed, the end result could end up looking rather bad. The lugs are pretty skinny to begin with...

Horrible refinished dial and fake medallion to boot. 🤮
