So is it a fake back? What gives it away?

OP means original post. The fonts don’t match, but for me the hippocampus is a huge factor. Just go back over and look at the lines and details. I’ll point out a few:

What even is this? It’s like they got frustrated with the tail and made a scribble hoping no one would notice.

Ok, that's really helpful! It's subtle you've really Gotta have a good eye for these kinds of details.. I was looking specifically at the fonts and they looked okay apart from the R.. But now you point it out, the expression on the head of the hippocampus is completely different.. Especially the eyebrow

Actually, the more I look at your examples of the hippocampus comparisons the more obvious it is.. And I'm looking at mine at the same time to compare and contrast..

A bump just to list the outcome if ya'll were curious. Paypal sided with me and Buyee locked my account until I repay what Paypal refunded. So there is still buyer protection, but at the cost of your account. It's a bit unfortunate as I really enjoy browsing yahoo japan, but what can you do

So you got a refund and PP clawed the funds back from Buyee. The original seller keeps his money.

You can potentially use fromjapan as a proxy bidding service if your Buyee account is suspended. I never really spent enough time using it to get accustomed to the logistics, searching, etc., but I know that some people seem to like it. While Buyee will trust you to make pretty large bids, it seems that in order to make a substantial bid on fromjapan, you need to have funds on deposit with them.

Dont take this the wrong way as I am really grateful for the suggestion.
I can't help but focus on the fact that I'm shafting Buyee in the end. I've asked them several times to try to return it but I've been told no across the board. I don't know if that policy changes when they finally lock out or disable my account or w/e, but I'd imagine it's been too long by now.

I totally understand where you are coming from. The original seller doesn't deserve to keep the money. However, this is a strategic choice that Buyee makes.

My understanding is that it's very important for Buyee to protect their perfect rating as a buyer. When a seller shipped me a fake item, not only would they not consider a return, they wouldn't even contact the seller or leave him a negative rating. And they explicitly told me that the reason was because they didn't want to risk any negative ratings from sellers.
