Original or redial? 1960s Constellation Pie Pan 167.005

Hi everyone,

I'm considering purchasing this vintage Omega Constellation Pie Pan and would really appreciate your opinions before making a decision.

The seller claims:

• Ref. believed to be 167.005 (case back has not been opened yet)
• Movement is believed to be Cal. 561
• Seller says the dial has not been refinished
• Daily rate is around +20 seconds/day
• Date is adjusted by advancing the hands (no quickset)

However, when comparing the dial with other known original examples, I noticed that the font—especially "OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED"—looks slightly different.

My questions are:

1. Does this appear to be the original factory dial, a service dial, or a redial?
2. Does anything else stand out as incorrect (hands, crown, date wheel, case, etc.)?
3. Assuming the movement is indeed Cal. 561 and the case back is marked 167.005, would you be comfortable buying it?

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

This is a redial, and certainly not among the better ones we see around here. A few other things are off, too. Avoid this watch, avoid the seller.

Thank you for your opinion. Could you explain which details on the dial or other parts make you believe it's a redial? I'm trying to learn more about vintage Constellations.

First of all - it isn't a 167.005 as that is a no-date dogleg. (BTW it would have a cal 551 not 561)
The base watch you show is a 14393 with a date.
It is a very poor redial (all the text is wrong) and quite heavily polished, with the wrong crown and hands.
I'm not keen on the date window either.

Thank you very much for the detailed explanation. I had incorrectly assumed it was a Ref. 167.005 with Cal. 561, so your clarification that the base watch is actually a Ref. 14393 is especially helpful.

I can now see that there are multiple issues beyond the dial, including the heavy polishing, incorrect crown and hands, and the questionable date window. I’ll avoid this watch and the seller.

Thank you as well for sharing the Constellation Collectors resource. I’ll study it carefully before considering another example.

I think when judging whether something is a re-dial, it is helpful to first look at the 'n's in 'Constellation'. And here you can see that they are both off
