True but they can still look pretty damned sharp.
Indeed that one is really sharp.
It's just something I observed. I wonder if the capped specimens I saw were simply polished, or that many come out of the factory with the softer edges. When the cases are manufactured, are the edges machined after capping? or is the machining done on the base metal before adding the gold layer?

IIRC, the base metal case is the correct shape and the 200mu 14k gold layer is 'wrapped around' and bonded to the SS case.
The lug facets are never quite as sharp as solid gold.
(I'm sure there was a thread somewhere, where someone posted a 'naked' SS case that had once been gold capped)

Gold cap watches can be a bit misleading as the bezel is solid 14k gold and of course, because of that, is as sharp as a solid gold cased Constellation - as you can see from my example above.

There's also the fact that in general the stainless steel and solid gold cases are in better shape - the former because they are harder and the latter because they are more sparingly used. If a gold cap/gold plate case is hardly used it can look very sharp. Like these seamasters:

It has a lot to do with modern tastes.
SS is the most popular as some find any gold watch too bling.

But also having a gold cap watch seems like a bit like chicanery.
“I’d like a gold watch but can’t afford it”
So the real thing is more desirable.

I personally have no issue with gold cap watches but desirability drives market forces and they say that gold cap watches command lower prices than SS.
(gold filled and gold plated even less of course)
Very good explanation this.

I don't mind capped watches if the rest is special enough. Here's my two examples (both rose gold):

I think a good exception for these two may be viable, they fall into the @MSNWatch example 😊

Those are gorgeous pieces. Especially the hobnail one.
