    Hi all,

Just bought a vintage seamaster and need some advice.

This seems to be a pressure fit caseback - but I would normally expect a groove to insert a Case knife. But I can't fine any groove.

Any advice on how to remove the case back please?

Well if it is it is it's too narrow to get my case knife in. Good spot though - my eyes clearly aren't what they were!

Most would counter by saying your case knife isn't sharp enough. ;)

It sucks getting old, doesn't it? I might have to get a bigger computer than the MacBook Air because I have to wear reading glasses on the small screen.

Hey - don't criticise my case knife. That cost me nearly a pound from Amazon! [emoji6]

if you don't know how to open it, what do you plan to do once it is open ?
Do yourself a favor - take it to a pro so you don't hurt your yourself or damage that beautiful watch !

Simply to have a look at the movement - find out the calibre and just learn a little about it. I'm used to opening watches but as you say - I don't want to leave a huge gouge in the caseback so I may have no option. Just wondered if there was a particular knack to this model.

joking apart here... I would take it to a reputable watchmaker for him to open if your not happy doing it yourself.

May have to. Another reason to open it is it was an EBay purchase. Just want to check the word "Miyota" isn't stamped on the movement [emoji23]

Well, I can't believe I'm saying this, but the one who lacks focus was very focused in this instance.:) Your knife is not sharp enough...

So for opening a case with a very small gap, I will start with a one sided razor blade:

You use this to act as a wedge (don't pry - ever) and open the gap enough to get a thicker blade in. Once you work the thicker blade in all around the case back, if the back has not popped off already, move to the next thicker blade, and so on. I'll say it again, don't pry to get the back off - ever.

    Cheers, Al

Thanks Al - might give that a whirl. Then I'll try that sledgehammer.

I can't believe it took the guy so long to get the wine out of the case
After spending months in the (dry) lands of sun and sand I would have had that box open with one blow of the hammer....
    [dreaming of red wine.....:taunt:]

I should have premised that by saying it's part of our Secret Santa pranks on a wine forum. I'm sure that box was sealed with Liquid Nail. In previous years, the sender has even dowel-pinned the box, and he usually includes a red dashed line around it to show the lowest point you can mitre saw the box open.

I have not been guessed correctly yet in this year's contest, despite giving 2 cryptic clues. Even guessed my Secret Santa on the first shot within 30 minutes of the reveal kick-off. It kinda helped that he shipped it from his off-site storage right near his house (all those years of moderating have given me Jedi level detecting skills) and I could access his cellar inventory to find out he was a regular buyer of the wine he sent, still had some of the same vintage, and recently removed one bottle from his inventory.

Yes, I use different kinds of knives for different gaps, and a film of food wrap.

    My kind of secret santa
But they don't do Santa here either
(I have however ordered a mixed case of Pauillac and Margaux for my impending Christmas break in Blighty - 7 days and counting)
Apologies for the thread hi-jack :)
