One grail vs one collection

Funny thing about grails, when you finally do get one, another comes along and the quest continues!
I kind of agree as I have/had a few watches I consider grails like my astronaut and omega diver and they weren't the end of questing. But thats not to say there isn't a "holy grail". The one above all others. To me that would be a snoopy speedy. Having that watch along with my other grails wouldn't stop me from collecting or buying anything else. But it would be the end of the quest for the grail. From there out its just collecting things I like and I like lots of watches.

Edited to add: Also As far as one grail vs a collection. I think as much as I love the snoopy I'd prefer a small collection. There are too many cool watches with amazing movements and rich history to only have one and if I was a one watch guy it would be a diver.

Three is the right number for me. One wouldn't do... one sport/dressy-ish, one large-ish chrono or diver and one normal-ish sized diver/weekender. Right now that is Omega AT, Breitling Avenger Chrono II and a Seiko SPB143. I'll rotate within those three categories but wouldn't want to give up the versatility.

"If I had this one, I'll never need another"
I said that with my first Swiss Army watch.
Same holds true with pocket knives, pens, etc. Seems that I'm more hoarder than collector 😀

Me too... I consider myself an "accumulator". Collections are curated, and every piece has a purpose. I might have a vintage Constellation, for example, if I didn't have Seamasters that are darn near identical.

One collection to change watches when i want. One expensive grail must be stressful to wear everyday 😲
Honestly very rare watches can fit every situations (Rolex Explorer ? Omega Speedmaster ?) , I prefer many for different situation, it's a big part of the pleasure for me to switch and coordonate watches with my clothes. 😁

Defo a collection to suit the OOTD/occasion/mood. I highly doubt a one watch grail would do it for me.

Even transferring kiddos in and out of the car while wearing a grail has some real hazards!

I’m finding it interesting that the assumption is that the grail is necessarily expensive and rare.

One is not enough. My important watches are grails only for me, but for different reasons than their financial value. My first mechanical watch I bought, my “wedding” watch etc... Life is a search and even a journey is a goal

I have three children and later in life would like to own three ‘great watches’ for them to inherit when i pass on.
Right now I have a birth year speedie which would be one of the final three and over a dozen ‘lesser watches’ that if I sold them all would cover two more at a similar value as my current speedmaster.
But I don’t plan on leaving this mortal world soon and in the mean time I get pleasure from choosing something different every day and moving on the watches that don’t get worn much. I like hanging out here, reading other peoples’ stories and questions, and picking up an interesting Valjoux 72 from the recommended eBay bargains thread.
If I was at the final three now I would not be able to sell them, and I would no longer have the daydream along the lines of “I can sell that and that and then buy that”.
And the real irony is none of my three kids are actually into watches! The things I fixate over would probably end up sitting in a bottom drawer until one day in the future one of them were to post “My father left my this old Omega......”

Ain’t that the truth!

With my little one, about to turn four, we spend lots of sofa time ogling the movement on one of my watches with a display back. Seems to be working!

His birth year watch is an Explorer 1, but he prefers my 3861 since it’s a “louder ticker”. I think we can work something out here. 😀

Agree. Make sure your kids have interest.

My father in law was similar except he bought a 1962 Cadillac for all his kids. 10! We inherited the "tan sedan". A runner but nothing but a pain in the ass to store. It was too long to fit in my garage so we had to pay for storage. Quite a burden. We quietly sold it along with the other kids and felt nothing but guilt. He LOVED the cars. We didn't.

I believe that like most things in life: "What can you afford"?
The biggest part of that would be your Grail, but I would definitely add an everyday beater.
My Grail or dress-up day watch is a RG Lange 1815 up & down and my everyday beater is an Omega SMP300 Vintage Master Co-Axil.

My biggest issue is that if I only had one watch I wouldn't get my grail id buy a seamaster 300 or planet ocean since those watches can work for just about anything. And I love those watches. But they aren't grails to me just the best tool for the job. My grail watches aren't too keen on diving (accutron and speedy)

On an emotional level I would trade all my watches for a patek 2499 or an early Journe Resonance with brass movement. Unfortunately, my collection is not nearly valuable enough for either of these. Plus, I would be afraid to wear either of these grails on a regular basis. So........I
will just keep my bucket of old Omegas, Breitlings, Vettas, Gallets, Enicars, etc
