Yes, but your Porsche didn't go on the Plaisted Polar Expedition! If it did, I'm sure the wheels were spinning a bit, as I don't think they drive very well on the ice. $100K? Please. gatorcpa
AAAAAAAHHHH!!!! I think Janis Joplin really wanted to sing "Lord, won't you find me a vintage Porsche Speedster" but the words didn't fit as good as Mercedes Benz so she worked Porsche into the next line. How completely cool would it be to run across a barn find like THAT?!?!? I might trade ALL my watches for a 356B. .... 'cept my VC.
Honestly, I don't think his polar expedition is that cool, and the watch isn't that relevant. Its not like Apollo 13 where they timed a thruster burn with a Speedmaster the bloke just wore a watch while he went out in the snow.
I think it's a pretty cool achievement - a watch worn on the first surface conquest of the North Pole. Also they navigated by sextant and you need the time the measurements were made to navigate properly so it was actively used in navigating. Not quite the moon landing but if it were a speedmaster worn on the moon it would have gone for more!
Like anything else, its "worth" what someone is willing to pay. Lots of big vintage car auctions in Monterey, CA this weekend, I'm sure there will be some crazy prices and likely a few records too.
No doubt with GPS - would love to see them navigate to the north pole correctly while drunk using a sextant!
