I’m another vote for the later 5513–excellent proportions, minimal dial text, vintage integrity, but with the white gold surrounds, which I prefer. I don’t think I’m interested in any Rolex at the moment, but if I were that’s what I’d go for.

Tropical Watch has one right now that appears to be (and is advertised as) unpolished and all original.

An update:

It took a lot of back and forth but have been able to at least narrow my search down a lot more.

I thought it was about lume color, no-date for symmetry, and ease of ownership when I started the quest but now realize it’s more about the basic aesthetics that I like and don’t like. Yes, it must be tritium but the more I look and try a few on it’s not the date window that is putting me off it is the WGS look I don’t care for.

So now I know it’s going to be a 5513, 16800 or 1680. Whichever of those 3 that ticks the other boxes, at the right price, will be the one and hopefully done. (Boxes = Attractive matte dial, appropriate bezel, thick case, quality hands that look good with the dial, period correct)

I’ve swung and missed on a couple over the last few weeks but at least I’m locked in now and not looking at everything.

I went with a matte dial 16800. Sapphire crystal, quickset date yet it has the look of a 1680.

My personal choice would be a 5 digit, I've got a 16610LV and matte dial 16800 which cover all the requirements of a sub I want modern & vintage .

that green is near perfection

My suggestion is the 16800 with matte dial and tritium ca. 1983. It has the vintage look but sapphire crystal and quickset date.

Slightly biased but I’m loving 90’s Rolex right now. I know it’s not on your shortlist but don’t rule out a tritium 16610.

While I have priorities, I never rule anything out. 😉
Totally agree on loving the 90s pieces. Always open to a 5 digit at the right price! I picked up a very reasonable 16570 recently because of that. A 1994 T25<$5000 was a no-brainer and will hold me over for a bit so I can wait for the “right” Sub to show itself.

Nice. Let’s see a pic of the 16570. I’ve got one in for major service and case refinish at the minute.

Not perfect, could use a case refinish like yours is getting. Still deciding if it’s a long term keeper before I go that route.

Very nice.
Mine is/was much worse but hopefully it will have a new lease of life soon.
