Hello everyone! My first post here. First of all, thank you for this forum. I have been learning quite useful things about watches, specially Vintage ones. For my first post I would like to ask an opinion about these two watches. I cannot identify them. The first one is being sold for around 185 euros (ca. 235 US dollars) which I think that is quite low for an Omega Vintage. Therefore I think it can be at least a bit suspicious. The second for around 450 euros (ca. 572 US dollars). Thank you all in advance for your time. Regards. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The first one has an original linen pattern dial and what looks to be a clean movement. Serial number and the date (1962) of caseback match up. The crown is a replacement, but a new Omega signed one should be fairly easy to source. Price is very good. Here is more information: http://www.omegawatches.com/planet-omega/heritage/vintage-watches-database?ref=14579 The second one seems to have an original dial, but there are issues I see with the movement. One of the screws on the winding wheel is gone and there is rust present. Crown is signed. Buckle not original and I doubt strap is OEM Omega. At that price, I'd pass. http://www.omegawatches.com/planet-omega/heritage/vintage-watches-database?ref=19981 Hope this helps, gatorcpa
The points that gatorpca makes about the second one are very pertinent. You need to ask yourself why such a clean looking movement has a missing screw and corrosion only on the crown wheel and its core. This could bean indication of other issues that can't be seen. Is the missing screw actually broken off? Has other corrosion been cleaned off but the repairer not been able to source replacement parts? Whichever way it is, if you are not sure about anything, step back. Experience shows that 9 times out of 10, there will be another one just around the corner.
I see age creeping around the edge of the dial on the first and poor case opening marks. Price OK if given a full cleaning Second overpriced due to condition and while winding wheels can be replaced. The missing screw could dictate a broken screw. Second is the main problem as it's not original and should be sitting flush. Wrong screw could mean wrong thread and damaged threads in plate due to this. Also center piece in winding system is not original. Appears to have two flat edges and post is sitting above the piece when it should be flush. Due to case marks. Try for a $200 even price if being a store bought piece. Doesn't budge. Walk and look for something a little cleaner DON
Agree with the previous posters. Missing screws might indeed be broken screws which is fixable but at a price. Dial is nice btw.
Thank you all for the cool replies and your time!! These are cool tips. I have to say that I had not thought about the points that were mentioned here.Even the rust did not even cross my mind! and although my eyes were leaning towards the second one, the rust and the question mark of what happened to that movement make it simply a no go! I don't expect to make a perfect buy for the first time, but I will continue reading threads and looking for something else! Thank you all again. Regards
