My head is going to explode.

ps - Erich is correct about the 32 mm PP Calatravas. They were made for several decades and might still be for all I know.

that's a reeded edge IMO. On coins too. "Coin edge" refers to having a lip along the diameter of the object.

For marketing purposes PP actually calls all round models "Calatrava"

Oh, like Longines owners!

I had time now to visit these links above and I must say, all this "Calatrava" semantics on either the bloomberg and hodinkee sites is pure bullshit... marketing Babla...
A Calatrava must not have a stepped bezel or a prominently slim or fluted bezel!
One of the main aesthetics is a wide, flat bezel...
slim, slightly downturned lugs is not enough! - there are plenty of watches of different brands which show these features and should not be named Calatrava

Here is a very early rare SS version, a specimen of the Ref.96, the most famous of all references, the one which was named Calatrava first.
Pressure shut case back. diameter 30.5 mm only

still a project, not finished yet... but you can see all the important design details like the wide flat bezel.

And this is an example of the so called "Large Calatrava", the Ref. 570 which is 35mm of diameter.

This example resembles all the features which are so much appreciated of the Calatrava design:

wide, flat bezel, facetted "barr" indices, dauphine hands, large winding crown,...

And those are beautiful. Thanks for your very interesting explanation. 👍

@LouS, given this unique opportunity to get the "OF dictionary of horological descriptions" straight, would you have a picture illustrating what you mean is "coin-edge"?

I thought coin-edge bezel referred to this type:

Thanks and best regards,

Unlike the writers at Hodinkee, I personally don't use the word "calatrava" for just any and all round Longines, specially not for tre tacche or sei tacches. Something for which I remember having been copiously excoriated a few threads ago as using vocabulary that's not consistent with the PP usage. So let's be consistent and logical and not castigate people for making distinctions, and then poke fun at them for not making any distinctions.🙄

I learnt something today! I was convinced that when people referred to "Calatrava" or "Calatrava-like" the watch needed to have a second subdial at 6. I was, of course, aware of the fact the real Calatrava where Patek Philippe's but not the description of one. Thank you!

Reading this ad again, and aside from the terminology, I can't help but notice this remarkable statement considering the $4,200 price tag:
"The probable date of manufacture is necessarily conjecture, but we’d place it at sometime in the late 1930s/early 1940s, looking at the serial number and the style of the dial."

Where's the "necessity"?

Does it mean Omega wasn't able to deliver an extract of archives pinpointing the exact date of the watch?
Or does it mean the writer is unaware of this possibility?
