Omega Speedmaster winding issue

My Speedmaster is not working anymore and seems to be able to wind indefinitely.

Does this sound like a mainspring problem and require full service? Any people in the Chicago area you would recommend or do I have to go to the OB?

Yes, most likely a broken mainspring, which will require a full service.

Cheers, Al

Hi @mbp, I’m sorry about your Speedy; I know it will be fixed, but I just recognized a bit of me died inside when I heard about your broken Speedy.

Same thing happened to me. The crown would just keep winding, but with a noticeable lower resistance than normal and every 5-7 turns there would be a very faint clicking sound. Mainspring broke. See it from the positive side - you will get your watch back looking brand new after a full service.

Thank you for the kind words.

Dropped it off at the Chicago OB yesterday--$900 servicing cost. Trying to stay positive.

Curious: what expected turnaround time did they give you? I hear stories of how Omega service orders are piled up everywhere and the wait time is months. My case mentioned above, which happened in mid October 2022, was ready only 4 weeks later.

Thanks. Seems it varies a lot across countries at the moment…

I’m hoping they’re giving a rough estimate and it’ll fall well-short of it. They said it probably won’t need to go to Switzerland.

Mine was mainspring plus crown and actually it was not lower resistance but very tight to wind.
Anyway it’s gonna be good. Fingers crossed that you get it back quickly! 😀

I was very happy with the service done by my OB’s service center when this happened to mine. When I got the watch back the new crystal was even installed with the omega logo perfectly orientated! Perhaps a little thing and quite easy to do, but it gave me a feeling of the service being done by a caring (and careful) watchmaker.

That’s not bad, it’s 6 months in the UK and 6-8 months in Australia 😒

Will keep you all posted on the turn-around time for repair. Heard back from the OB a few weeks ago and was told it was definitely a mainspring issue.

Also, I have been wearing my watch on the flat link 50th anniversary Apollo 11 bracelet with Forstner endlinks. The OB heard from the service center that they found OEM end links which would fit the Ultraman. I will report back with a part number/fit when the watch is in hand.

Just wanted to update everyone:
Watch came back in about 12 weeks.

I was offered the 026STZ011630 end links for my Apollo 11 50th Anniversary OEM bracelet.
They fit perfectly--much better than the Forstner endlinks I was using on the bracelet.

@mbp I just ordered an A11 50th for a 1863 (311.33). I ordered some US hollow flat end links per some research I'd done; curious to know what endlink Omega sent you and what speedmaster you had the A11 on. an Omega endlink would be nice.
