Well the one you linked is the same one he sold to me as well

Looking at the ad from Apollo and ad from Peter, I’d say that yes, it appears Apollo sold the same watch to multiple people.

Totally correct. I thought that the watch was on its way and decided to try to flip it. Unfortunately it never arrived. In my opinion nothing wrong with that. If there is something wrong I must have been doing something wrong for the last 25 years. I buy watches that I think I can make a profit on , but also ones that I might enjoy wearing for a period of time. I am not trying to retire on the sales I make, just enjoying the thrill of buying and selling.

Considering you have selling privileges & have sold on here, I’m glad you’ve told the forum that you have no problem selling items that you are not (yet) in possession of. At least people will now know in advanced you are okay doing business like this.

No one is faulting you for trying to sell for more than you paid. What's rubbing people the wrong way is that you were trying to sell a watch that was not yet in your possession and when called out on it doesn't sound like you think it's a big deal. But in most watch groups that I'm in (including OmegaForums), that's not allowed, and for good reason. It creates an environment where you have "sellers" using other peoples photos to sell watches they don't own. It's common for sellers to do this on Ebay and Chrono24. The buyer, agrees to purchase it from the "seller" who in this case is just a middleman/broker...and once the funds are received from the buyer, then the broker/middleman goes out and actually tries buys the watch from the real seller who actually possesses the watch. If the middleman can't come to terms with the real guy selling it, then the middleman cancels the sale with the buyer and it ends up being a huge waste of time for everyone involved.

Correct, if we found someone knowingly doing that here they would at the least no longer be selling here and depending on severity may not be a member anymore. A lot of people have been hurt badly by people engaging in this sort of watch short selling and its a nightmare trying to resolve when deals go south.

It's a very common practice with some Japanese sellers who advertise watches for sale as their own that are actually owned by pawn brokers. Only after the seller secures a buyer does the seller then purchase the watch from the pawn broker and resell it to the buyer. If, in the meantime, the pawn broker has sold the watch to someone else, the seller cancels the sale and it's a colossal waste of the buyer's time. This has happened to me and the practice has soured me on making purchases from Japan.

Where it gets particularly dangerous is cases where like in this one, the short seller gets scammed, or loses the package in freight etc, and they don’t have that money to lose or don’t feel like taking that loss, so they pass the loss on by scamming or ripping off the end buyer. Because the guys doing this are looking for big arbitrage opportunities, they tend to go for watches that are too good to be true and fall into this category more than normal people do.

Using old photos also means there’s no way of knowing if they accurately represent the current condition of the watch. Any amount of damage or wear could have occurred in the meantime, or during the shipping process. It’s definitely a bad idea, and unfair on potential buyers.

Again, manners maketh the man. As I thought that I had bought a good Omega Speedmaster that I could sell on, I decided to do so. I hope that you don't fall off that very high fence that you seem to be sitting on. Good luck.
So you thought you were going to make a quick buck at someone else's expense but got scammed instead. Classic....

What would have happened if you had sold the watch before you recieved it? Do you accept funds from your buyer when the watch isnt even in your possession? That is shady behaviour if you ask me. What happens to your buyers funds when you dont receive the watch? Do they get a immediate refund?

Might be a good idea to sell in the dealer sub-forum then, rather than the private sales forum.

A man has got to do what a man has got to do.

A man (or woman) shouldn't do what is shady and deceitful...
I think there's nothing wrong selling a watch with profit but a lot wrong with advertising and selling a watch not in your possession.....

What year exactly?

Here's the evolution for the 311.30.42.30.01.005 (previous version with bracelet). The one with strap was slightly cheaper....

I'm not really sure how you could put a price on something you neither possess nor have inspected for condition, condition issues and timekeeping?

So just saw this post - I bought one of Apollo’s watches, received the PayPal invoice, paid on a credit card, received the tracking details. After being held up at Romanian customs for a few days, it looked to be returned to the sender. Followed up, he apologised and said it was to do with Romanian customs rules, and refunded me… Not sure what’s going on here - it is odd in any case.

FYI - the 40th Anniversay Apollo had been previously flagged on here in 2018 - it was the same serial number and also from Romania

This thread told me one thing. There are two individuals here that have shady and downright fraudulent selling practices.

UPDATE: Today I received a mail from PayPal saying that they have decided the case in my favour and will refund me the entire amount. I should receive the funds in my account in the next days. So that is a happy end for me and a lesson too. I'll be even more careful next time but am pleased I paid with regular PayPal at least.

I hope all those involved are refunded appropriately. I hope this type of criminal behaviour :whipped: stays the exception so that we can still have fun on here with our hobby! 👍

Pleased to hear that it has been resolved, that must be a relief! For all that they are maligned, if you do things properly, PayPal do eventually get to the right answer. I guess the lessons learned are:

- don’t use PayPal F&F or bank transfer unless you definitely know and trust the seller
- ideally ask for a PayPal invoice and pay it using a credit card
- ask for proof of postage and a tracking number
- if there’s an issue, don’t wait too long to escalate it - and certainly don’t rely on the seller saying “it’s in the post” - let PayPal and your credit card provider know..
