I was offered this Speedmaster 861 with a unique logo at the 9 o'clock sub dial. I saw one picture on the net and it looks like a commemorative model for the Gemini 12 piloted by Aldrin and Lovell. Can anyone shed more information on this watch? Thanks.
Part of the "Missions" series, late 90's. Fairly rare (only 23 sets were made). There's an Aldrin/Lovell currently for sale at Rolex Forums for $3,250.
I could be wrong, but I think there were only 23 full sets made... from what I've seen there were more of these available as single watches (i.e., you could buy a single mission).
There were 40 missions cases produced, each watch in the case is numbered XX/40 (a picture of the caseback would be helpful); and then there were an additional 100 - 150 unnumbered mission watches produced. So, there should be around 200 of each of these total. (Apollo XI and Apollo XIII mission patch watches are different). These do pop up from time to time, but in general, their limited number does not translate to high prices, these sell at normal moonwatch prices.
Because, in my opinion, they don't look nice. Rarity does not equate to value. Unfortunately....I would be worth a fortune
