OMEGA Speedmaster '57 (two-counter version) - why does it not get much love? (photo heavy)

Hi!

I am huge OMEGA freak with Omega only collection (7 pieces now, 8 soon). Last weekend after search for a two-counter chronograph I eventually pulled the trigger for good old '57. Now after two first days together and trying to browse some more info about this watch I wonder why it is so unpopular. Is it the thickness? Price? Anything else?

There are a few to chose from with different dials and hand sets, execution is fantastic (and much better than so popular Moonwatch), even for me - it took quite a while to finally spot this one and bring into my watchbox.

Any other '57 two-counter owners here?

It's a fine watch. I owned one briefly, and while I loved the accuracy, build quality and looks, I didn't find it as comfortable as I'd hoped -- thickness, but also balance on my wrist, even when compared to a few dive watch monsters like my Doxa 1500 and 5000, which are heavy and thick but perhaps a bit better balanced.

But it's a great piece for larger wrists, and that movement is a stunner. I'd be all over a version that came in at 41/14mm or so.

Because a third counter is missing, and too much thickness, as you pointed.

I’m in, love mine. As said by others build quality and finish amazing. I’m not a massive fan of the bracelet and can see how it might not be able to get a perfect fit to help with top heavy balance but on a strap or NATO it’s lovely.
Bonus with the dial layout is timed correctly you could use the 3 o’clock dial for a second time zone.

Stunning looking watch didn't sit right on my wrist when I tried it on.

Personally I have never liked date windows on a chronograph... but, that's just me.

Very nice watch, but for me it comes down to two words, too big.

I'm not in love with the model, but I must say that I really like the two subdial layout on the automatic speedmasters. I get that it defies heritage, but I think it's a much more intuitive design and it also makes for larger, more legible registers.

In regard to the '57, my issue is the straight lugs. I think it adds to the perceived bulkiness of an already thick watch.

I tried one on in an OB and, whilst I did find it a little bulky, it really is a gorgeous watch in the metal and very stylish. Ultimately, it was too expensive for me and I ended up with a FOIS, which I do really love as my one modern Omega.

There are three counters, but only two subdials 😀

Nothing wrong with it, hope you enjoy yours! 👍

Speedmaster fans around here seem to lean heavily to the classic configuration, even for modern references.

Two words: George Clooney.
Dude ruined movies, tequila and now Omega 57s.

The Fifty Seven on a custom made crocodile strap (actually this strap has been crafted for my Aqua Terra with olive dial, but I think it works well with this one too).

Absolutely an amazing watch. They have definitely slipper under the radar a bit.

I own two: each commemorates the birth of one of my daughters. Needless to say, they are my favorites and are priceless to me.

i think it's beautiful and may still pull the trigger on a two-tone version at some point. my only reservation has been its thickness relative to the watch case diameter. Wish it was more like 13.5 or 14mm thick

I think is way too big, especially the thickness, and not crazy on the date, but if you have big wrists, could see it working. Much prefer the 60th anniversary reissue myself.

I recently tried a 57’ on. I love this dial layout but the Lug to lug makes the watch feel very large on my 6.75” wrist. In a bracelet I believe it’s even slightly worse as the first links (against the case) are rigid and actually extend the effective lug to lug even further and there is no micro adjust (not 100% certain) like the other Speedies. Definately better for a large wrist IMO.

It absolutely is for the large wrist - 41,5mm is theoretical diameter but it looks much bigger and wears bigger.

For me this is a pure strap lover, not so good for bracelet, especially the OEM one. As you noticed the endlinks give the watch huge length, not suitable for most wrists. On the strap though it's good even on the smaller side of the wrist.
