Omega Speedmaster 145.022-78 - Advice (New to Omegas) 1982

Hi everyone!

I'm quite new to vintage watches and specifically Omegas. I have a few other watches (Rolex, Seiko, Tudor), but I have always wanted a birth year Speedy. I've been searching for one on and off for a few years and haven't quite found one close enough to my birth year and in a decent shape and located in the US until now.

This is an Omega Speedmaster Pro 145.022-78. The dealer indicates it was made in 1980 based on Serial 44821563. Based on my research in this forum and online, it seems that it's probably closer to 1982 than 1980. I know the charts and such online aren't exact but this probably feels close enough from what I can tell. The bracelet seems to be period correct.

The dealer is asking $4800.

Was just curious on people's opinions on the condition here for the price and if there are any red flags here that jump out.

Thanks so much for any input.

Hi and welcome!
It is always fun to read about people looking for their birth year watch, but it could be a bit challenging!
Regarding Speedys - the archives are closed now, so it could never be 100 %...
But have you searched here: (I did it for you...😉)

I did a purchase a while ago for a 1980´s watch (hopefully), and it did take some time to find it....

Story on that journey:

And the search is half the fun!

I also have another 78, but that one was not for a birth year search...I got it because of the condition!
There is a weird thing with that one - the Chrono!

And regarding yours...it is hard to assess the quality of the case and dial.
The pictures are not the best, try and get better, and maybe outdoors?
Not sure about the endlinks...?

Here is the one with the weird Chrono!

Yes! I have used ilovemyspeedmaster, and yes, I saw it pegged it as 1980. I also used a few other lists online that I saw said this was 1983? (https://www.bobswatches.com/omega/omega-watches-serial-numbers) (https://www.watchvaultnyc.com/How-Old-Is-My-Omega_b_44.html) https://www.db1983.com/omega-speedmaster-serial-numbers

And then a few posts on this forum suggested maybe I was close.

But if ilovemyspeedmaster is probably the go to then perhaps I should keep searching.

Thanks for sharing your journey - that was a fun read.

Regarding your serial nr,
I have lots of serial numbers for 78 Speedys that should place them as 1980´s, but only one with an extract.
The serial nr on that one is 4482xxxx, with a September production.
So the one you are looking at should be a 1980, but nothing is 100%!

Do not rush regarding this one you are looking at, ask for more and better pictures first.

And please do come back?
😀

And yes...some might think that Birth Year watches are a stupid thing...but not me!

That is super helpful. Thank you... yes asking for more pictures and video but not gonna rush it. Appreciate the advice and encouragement.

Yeah, maybe they are a silly thing but I suppose that's the fun in it.

Thanks for that info about the extract.

I’d trust ILMS over any generic online list as it interpolates from known verified data. There can be anomalies, particularly with early 70s watches but if ILMS says it’s 1980 then it’s likely 1980. Where ILMS struggles or is to be used as a guide at best is where there is little extract data such as 1957/8 or the 1990s perhaps.

Thanks for the extra confirmation. Yeah, I think I was kind of splitting the difference between multiple sources but I'll go with ILMS going forward.
