HI OF!

This will be my first auction report for 2026!
The holidays and a loooong and nice vacation made me take a break from auctions, but now I am back…😁

One of the major auction houses had this one up, and reading the description:
A Speedmaster 145.022-74, with papers and a 1171/633 bracelet.

The auction was up on several biding platsforms, so some of you must have seen it?

74´s don't show up on auctions so often, so I took a closer look (well….. I look at every vintage Speedy that comes up!).

The first thing that struck me was that the hands on the subdials were very white….so these must have been replaced.

But first - the basics!

The dial had a step, which is unusual, but they are out there.
The crystal was very scratched, so a bit hard to study the quality.
The lume looked complete, and had a nice and even color.
And according to the auction house, the dial was in a good condition, but do we trust them…??
I did not ask for more detailed pictures, so who really knows?
The DNN bezel was bleached/faded and had some small scratches and dings, but a large crater on the 200, and a paintloss on the 250.

The case had marks, dings and a couple of deeper scratches, the edges looked soft and must have had a light polish.
Case back looked ok, with the correct fonts, none of the black ink left.
The hands were faded, and had black lume - not very attractive.
Not really sure about the crown and pushers…..

The movement looked clean, some small marks, but nothing that stood out.
Serial nr 3161xxxx was correct for a 74.

Grading the watch?

Dial (if we trust the auction house) Good/Very Good??
Bezel Fair minus
Case Fair minus
Movement Good (after a needed service Good plus)
The hands were poor

A value with the bracelet and papers around 2300€ / 2800$, maybe 300-400 more since the dial was stepped?
The watch did not move my Watchometer, so no Master Plan on this one.

But I did follow the auction…!
😉

And the watch got lots and lots of bids, and finally ended at 4100€ / 4800$ including the premium!

I did not see that coming, either my assessment was way off, or auction fever after the holidays?

Enjoy and please do comment!

Id say it’s wearable, but agree price high. I would grade it slightly higher that yours but close. I haven’t seen step dial on -74 wonder how unusual that is and if that impacted price.
Someone here is -74 collector, or is it -76?

Well, my 145.022-74 might have cost me a bit more, it's infinitely nicer than this one... Honestly, other than this being a full(ish) set and possibly one owner, it has very little going for it. Anyway, I hope the buyer of it is happy.

Someone purchased a bracelet, a nice ghost DNN bezel, and a warranty card/ manual.

The value in the -74 and -76 is all in the lume and dial lume matching the hands. In this case mossy lume on the hands and an OK non matching dial. While hand lume tends to appear a little darker then dial lume this is outside expected variance. As also noted subdial hand patina does not match main hands.

Over all poor piece, thst is not attractive. I’m left with the impression that this might be a put together piece.

The -74 and -76 as well as the -78 are all about overall appearance and cohesion of the patina. This piece does not have that.

I used this watch (sold) as a reference point!
Borrowed picture from Chronoholic/ @ndgal , and I do hope that this is ok to post?

Does step dial on a -74 AM increase its appeal /value at all?

Yes if it’s a good piece.

I think this dial has intact lume that has slightly yellowed… hard to tell. So if it was out of the watch it would have a premium over dome -74 or the identical pre sept 1978 -76 models dial vs dial. In this watch I’d say minimal to negligible increase as it’s missing the matching hands. So TLDR the better the watch the greater the step dial premium is. At higher levels, maybe up to 1k usd premium, this watches level none at all imho.

I’ve never really been able to come up with a rhyme or reason for steps on -74’s as they appear on early and later examples in about the same frequency. It’s entirely possible that they all left the factory with domes and the are spare part dials “service dials if you will” left over from -72 production. The theory is some people really wanted step dial and it was swapped for an older dial at purchase.

For comparison this is my -76 with a ghost bezel.

Notice the dial lume and hand lume matching and being harmonious. In this case we see the slight green lume observed in this time period for non degraded lume.

Ignore the slightly soft case and the needed cleaning. 😉

That's a wild price for that.

In a small fit of watch buying/selling insanity I posted my 145.022-69 on Reddit a year or two ago for $4000 and had no takers. Not even one message 🤷🏻

Well at least yours has better lume than mine, and probably the correct case back. The bezel is about the same. I knocked it about a bit when it was my daily watch. It is one thing to wear it as a 500 dollar watch, completely different when it is 5000 and studied to death. Where every little scratch matters.

I have not posted it in a while since it lives on a plush snoopy. Is interesting to look at it again.

Not going anywhere. Given that I have so many other watches there really is no need to do anything with this one. Other than to look at it and admire it from time to time. Or occasionally strapping it on to mow the lawn.
