·Underbidder….There is a word I don't like,
NOT at all!
Those who bid on auctions knows the feeling….and second place brings no prizes…🙁
I seldom get buyers remorse after a win on an auction (it has happened…),
but missing a buy, I sometimes hear the voice in the back of my head - Why the fluff did you not go further…and further..and further…?
And that is why I make up my Masterplans…and try to follow it!
This watch came up on an auction, and I immediately noticed the clean and attractive condition.
And reading more in the description, the serial nr was 2911xxxx!
Could it have a nice brown dial?
The pictures weren't the best, so I had to ask for more.
They looked very promising, and I also had a chat with the curator.
He has helped me before, and knows my ”obsession” with Speedys.
Sadly he confirmed my questions regarding the dial, it is black, but with a slight, so slight brown tone.
But still a vey nice clean dial, even though there were some stains/spots on the indices.
He had a hard time taking more detailed pictures, so I had to use them I got for assessing the condition.
Grading this 69:
The dial - trusting the curator about it.
Very Good plus
The lume - they are complete with a nice warm color, but some of them have stains/spots…
Good?
The bezel - It looked very nice, some very small chips and ding.
There is lots of dirt on it, but it should clean up with the service.
A bit hard to assess the fonts, if they were the more valuable ”thin font”?
Good plus/Very Good minus
The case - very sharp and attractive edges, brushing is very visible.
Fine conditioned cases are very rare, so that was very nice to see!
A few details since we are grading a very fine watch, and it could be time to be a little picky…
How much does it bother that the back sides of the lugs are very scratched?
Excellent minus/Very Good plus
The caseback - very nice condition, lots of very thin scratches (nothing bothering) and the engraving is very well defined.
Very Good
The movement - the watch had been opened, very clean, some small marks on the screw heads.
Very Good
And on to the rest of the details, also very important, and some might skip this part thinking that it could be solved down the road…
The hands - the subdials looked nice, but the rest of the hand are not so sexy…
Lume with different aging/discoloration, and the minutehand had some odd discoloration.
This is not unusual, but it would be more fun if they were clean....
Pushers and crown looks original to the watch, always a big plus!
So…Value….?
My Watchometer did not go full throttle, and since I have a few nice 69´s, I could be a bit cool about this one…(Yeah Right…😉)!!
But a lovely watch - and I valued it at roughly below Very Good, around 6100 € / 7000 $
And we always have to count in the cost for a service…
Auction day…and with a low estimate (as usual) - lots and lots of bids!
And I had my battle till the bitter end…
With the little devil on my shoulder ….one bid more…one bid more...
But sadly, I stopped with my Masterplan….and it got sold for 5850 € / 6800 $
The next level (my possible next bid) would be 6200 € / 7200 $….
Prices including the premium.
I am not sure if I did the right thing here, and if I didn't have my other nice 69´s, I would have gone further…a bit further....
Guys and Gals - did I do wrong…??
TBH, I didn't initially plan on writing this - but this Forum is for sharing information, pictures, feelings and experiences!
So please let me know, I can take it!
