Omega SMP 2531.80, Sword Hand Mod

Over the years I have developed a bit of a Seamaster Professional addiction. I have owned approximately 15 of several models.

The one design aspect that I never loved are those skeleton hands. I don't dislike them, but don't love them either. I think the best hands are on the 2254 SMP.

Well...it was time to act.

I worked with Excelonman, David, to source the 2531.80 and 2254 sword hands. We work with the Watch Doctor and here are the results!

It's a simple mod, but gives it a more mil spec look.

I know this might be a "polarizing" mod for the SMP diehards, but I can tell you I personally love the results!!

I prefer the skeleton hands, but I really like the lume shot with the swords. Very nice.

I prefer the skeleton hands also... The sword minute hand is too long and blocks the hour plots...

I think they're the wrong shape for the watch.

I think if the hands were a little shorter then they would go better with the dial.

This is a mod I did to my 1120 watch, I'm also not 100% sure about the hands, but still like it

These hands are from the smaller dialled version of the railmaster, maybe you could get similar hands to the 2254 but from a smaller version using the same movement?

I do that modification 4 years ago. How deeply I wish you believe me the step forward it was. I have a SUB C, and sincerely after the modificcation, I prefer the SMP, better size, much more clear reading, better lugs, non cyclps, etc...

It has been a couple of years but the length of the minute hand still bothers me. If it were only 1-1.5mm shorter I believe it would work. As it is, it looks like someone has s t r e c h e d it.

And yet the sword hands work so well (imho) on the 225X.XX models where they seem to extend perfectly to the edges of the lume plots and ends of the minute hashes 😀

This reissued as LE with matte ceramic bezel and possibly applied markers like on the AC dial would most likely be the second new watch from Omega I could not resist.

My final version of this watch, I tried 2 sets of different Omega hands and eventually came back to the sword hands 👍

Sword are much nicer and more usable than the skeleton hands but I agree that they don't work so well on the dials where the min hand covers the indices. Can't say that I like the RM hands at all, sorry to say.

You know what? I've changed my mind on this. I really like the sword hands in all these photos.

I would suggest you consider using hands rom the mid-sized SMP ref. 22525000. This is the mid-size version of the 22545000, and if we look at hand lengths...

25318000 - original:

H - 7.5 mm
M - 11.5 mm

22545000 - too long:

H - 9.5 mm
M - 14 mm

22525000 - much closer:

H - 8 mm
M - 11.75 mm

So the mid-sized sword hands are only slightly longer than the original SMP skeleton hands are. For reference the hour/minute hands part number (they come in a set) is 065PZ4140.

Cheers, Al

Nice Al, that's what people need.
