Hi

I’ve been eyeing a SM300 for some time but need some help to verify if it’s fake or not.

Thank you for your help.

Actually I have a better plan. Let’s start telling the noobs all is good so they can hoover up all the bullshit fakes.

It’s lovely mate. Spend away.

Can we do that sticky I suggested yet or shall we wait for another 10 of these?

^^ How rude - we were all noobs once - some of us still are. No need to read these threads if it upsets you so much.

Been a while since I've seen this variant.
At least they are asking before purchase instead of: "Look what I just purchased, tell me how I did" AND then spend 3 pages arguing back and forth. THEN move into the cat pics followed by a locked thread.

Stickies or not, these threads will continue to happen. The forum used to have a bunch of really useful stickies geared towards newbies, but they were done away with as it was proven time and again they they were never utilized and only cluttered the tops of each sub forum they were located in.

That said, yes, the watch is fake.

I'm curious as to what the tells are that this watch is a fake. The crown definitely looks like a more recent replacement. Apart from that, I can't tell. Can someone school me please? Thanks in advance for your responses.

I would try a PM to the 300 experts, otherwise the fake makers gain knowledge.

This is an older fake with one of the easiest tells. The more recent ones have already moved beyond this so I don’t see any great threat in discussing it. As noted above by calalum (but mangled by spellcheck) the tell is called stubbies. Take a close look at the lume block. Note how the white minute index is just visible outside the block. That’s a stubby and is only seen on fakes. There are several other tells here too. It’s not one that will fool many after a bit of study. Extra care should be taken with examples like this that purport to be military issue.

Rather than a stickie ((stickee, sticky) which they never read anyway)) could you compile a list of threads/posts where these questions have been posed and answered.

Then, for future use you (or any of us awake at the time) can simply attach the info to the new post and the OP can do some research and make their own decisions.

I would do it, but I'm on my second Friday evening Guinness and can't be arsed.

Thank you for sharing this information. I have googled some SM300s and was able to spot the ones with stubbies. So at least I have learnt one 'tell', albeit one that is out of date with new fakes.

I do get why the experienced members get irritated by so many 'Seamaster 300 - Is it fake?' threads. They turn up so often it must be infuriating. I also get that the SM300 is a reference newbies should stay well clear of.

These look like dealer photos, who's the seller?

Fake milspec SM300 is punchy, are they pricing it as such? 10k plus? Or is it at a price too good to be true? What made you pick this one?

Too good to be true. Think we can all agree there are no good cheap SM300s. I've been looking for a few years. Don't bother any more. Too many dodgy ones, and good ones are too much for what I think they offer.

Should have bought a watchco when they were cheap.

That is a very good idea Jim. That said for the reasons stated above, I am reluctant to provide the scammers a one stop reference about what they need to improve so instead I have listed 6 recent threads like this where fake models are being discussed. In future when we get another of these along (I'd give it less than a week) we can link to this and let the would be buyer figure it out.

Thought i would catch up on my reading on SM300, to activate my knowledge and join as it such a popular topic lately 😀 .
So here is my try to judge this 165.024 of which i cant figure out the Seamaster 300 script type, it looks like it belongs more to a Big Triangle dial ?
It is a cal 552, nr 2628xxx, with i think a correct D bezel 1967/68 , and a good caseback.

The dial says T swiss T but has plain (white) colour on the lume sections. So cleaned or reprinted in soem way ? The Omega text and 3,6,9 also has very strong seriff l think ? Or a service dial or cleaned in some way ? Wrong seconds hand i think. Thanks for your help !
