·Hi everyone, I went to an Omega shop recently to get my battery changed. They initially said the charge would be £40, which was cheaper than the usual £100ish I have previously paid, so I of course jumped at the opportunity and agreed. The shop changed it and did not charge saying it probably needs a service for £450, the watch is probably not worth much more than that at the moment. They also mentioned the crown having issues, the only issue I had was the crown was a little stickier than on some of my other Omega watches. I should have checked the watch at the store, but the minute I looked at it the watch wasn't working properly, the second hand and hour hand work fine but the minute hand doesn't move properly (it is loose) and only moves around when the watch face the watch is rotated. The crown is also far worse and actually feels like it is grinding when it is moved.
While usually I would believe the manufacturer of the watch, Omega shops have multiple times tried to upsell me in the past. I have been told I need a new bracelet and a full service on another watch, which would have seen me part with close to £1000, but the minute I sent it to the Omega service centre they just changed the battery and seals for £85ish. Similar instances have ocurred when I went into certain Omega stores. I am rather suspicious they may be attempted to do this again, as the watch was working fine before the battery change and it was brought in only a few days after the battery had died.
Is the loose minute hand (which only moves when the watch is moved and rotated) a common problem with the quartz Omegas? Can a crown start to grind when only the battery has been replaced? Is the £450 they quoted excessive for a quartz service and would it be ok to go to another watch repairer to fix the minute hand and the crown?
Thanks in advance for any insight and help you can provide.
