Hi OF! I would like your opinions on this omega seamaster. The 16 th January is the birthday of my father and I wanted to buy this watch for him. The seller is asking 450 euros (not negociable).

This is what I know about the watch after doing some research :
  • Caseback reference : 14704 3 -> I checked on omega database and the year of production would be since 1959
  • Movement : cal 591 174.XXX.XXX-> dating to 1959 which is period correct
  • Dial : I’m not very experienced but dial seems fine and not refinished
  • Hands : I’m really not sure but from what I know dauphine hands are correct for this model (I just have some doubts about the second hand which appears to be black? Is it a deal breaker?)
  • Case : Is a bit worn up, but I can’t tell if the cas has ever been polished?
  • Crown : for sure not correct

Here are the pictures that I received from the seller :

Are my assessments correct? And most important would you buy this watch if you were me?

Thanks in advance for your precious help!

It looks very nice. If I adopt you, will you buy me one too.

If your father is a normal person and not a watch collector the question is "will he like it?" Never mind what we freaks think, that's the only thing that matters. This is way out of my speciality but it looks honest to me. Perhaps budget for a service -- after Jan 16th of course.

In fact I don’t need to adopt you because I already have one 😀

They’re nice watches, this is my 1959 14704.61 model with a 17,87*,*** 591 serial number. Runs brilliantly for a 62 year old watch

Thanks! To be honest it’s my father that made me like vintage watches and especially omegas. He has a small collection and so do I. For the previous years he offered me many watches and I wanted to make him a special present for his birthday. He is not a specialist (and me neither) but he always want his watches to be 100 % authentic that’s why I wanted your expert’s opinion 👍

Not horrible for the price. Too bad there's not enought time to have it serviced.

The hour and minute hands are not necessarily wrong. The second hand, if it's truly black, might be.

Actually, I’ve had this 2-3 years and haven’t yet bothered to have it serviced.

Also good to see that you have the appropriate buckle on the strap. Apart for the fact that original buckles like that can fetch £50 +, it suggests that whoever owned the watch has kept it carefully.

The lance (?) hands are correct on all those of this model that I’ve seen previously. The sweep hand may or may not be gold coloured but it’s no big deal to leave it or change it.

And the price is good. I paid £400 for mine and thought (and still think) I got a good deal. Mine also had a vintage buckle.

Thank you once again for all your feedback! So I will send a message to the seller and confirm that I will buy the watch. I will send you pictures as soon as I receive the watch and also have it revised as soon as possible. 👍

Don´t expect it to run too good. Regulator pointer seems awfully off. Also scratches around auto winding mechanism. Expect rotor rattling.

The buckle is 70ies, not period correct for this watch

You are absolutely correct, I even didn’t notice for the regulator pointer
:whipped:

Will definitely go for service asap

Hey everybody. Sorry for not giving news until now (had my exams at university). I received the watch! I offered it to my father and he is really grateful and really likes it. He couldn’t resist to try it on, so heres a pic of the watch already on his wrist. Thanks again for all your help, your are the best guys!

Ps : second hand is correct, it just has a bit of oxydation
