Hi OF. Been a while, but now getting back into buying watches. Don't know if this is considered "vintage" or modern, but I have an opportunity to purchase this SeMPC Ti for a good price.

The seller stated this watch is from 1985, since the serial number starts with 486xxxxx, which matches the "Titane" case. However, with some research I know these SeMPC Ti Chronos around this serial number were sold starting 1995 or so up to 2000 even. This has the caliber 1154 (instead of the 1164) which is the older model and also has yellowing of tritium markers, instead of super-lume.

Just wondering for pricing sake and collectability (since I know these were pretty popular) if the older cal. 1154 (which was the one in Chuck Maddox's) and tritium is more valuable/collectible than the cal. 1164 with super-lume. If it doesn't matter, then should I just find one with the "better quality" caliber and super-lume that still glows? Having taken a look, there is some glow to this tritium one. The SeMPC Ti may not be a vintage...yet...but is this a good buy if I were able to get this one under $2k?

That style was seen no earlier than 1995. Tritium was phased out around 1997, that dial does look to have tritium lume.

The watch looks in good condition but If that red dot is real then that has never been serviced and is likely running like crap. I personally see the red dot on a 25 year old watch as a negative not a plus. It is cheap at the price but needs a service for sure so add $500-750 for that.

Yup, it's running about 15 secs fast each day I'm told. Negotiating with the seller that I need to factor in service. But is the older 1154 with tritium markers a better collectible than the "newer" 1164 with super-lume? Or being "just a 30 year old" watch it wouldn't matter?

It doesn't really matter on a 1990s SMP chrono as far as I can see. Yes tritium would add value to a Speedmaster but unfortunately on the SMP range the hands and dial usually don't match at all on the tritium examples, the hands go much darker so there isn't a pleasing look. I would say they are around the same. Forgive me for saying this, but the chrono isn't the nicest SMP, the design works best as a 3 hander and prices reflect this. If you want an Omega chrono you look at a Speedy, if you want to dive you take an SMP. the SM Chrono is a Spork, a mix up of 2 worlds.

Haha, I do have a Speedmaster Pro, the newer sapphire sandwich 1863, a SMP 300m Diver 2500d, and a PO 9300 Chrono. The only reason I am considering this one is to add a titanium model to my collection and that Chuck Maddox says it's one of his "go to" watches. Also, the price may be too good to pass up. Thank you for letting me know that tritium and super-lume on "newer" Seamasters may not matter to collectability.

Chuck's opinions still carry considerable weight despite his passing, and rightly so. and he has some personal friends on here so I am treading carefully but in several ways I do not share his opinions. He was working in a pre internet time and presumably liked chunky ungainly watches 😉.

Oh and his grail is not my grail.

I wouldn't go for it unless you want it - Chuck Maddox was a beloved figure but just because he liked it, doesn't mean you have to!

Of course, shoot me a PM if you decide not to go for this one, I might want it - Chuck Maddox or not, lol
