Hi all, this is my first post I recently inherited this automatic water resistant Omega Seamaster from circa mid Fifties from my father and is currently having it fixed and serviced. He bought it in the early sixties at a pawn shop in Cape Town, South Africa. Case no: 2846.2.5c Calibe 501 Serial no: 14 974 XXX Spares needed glass, stem & crown and auto axle. They are asking me around $400 for the service and repairs... As far as I am aware it was last serviced in the late Sixties and he stopped wearing it around the year 2000 when the glass got damaged. It was still working and keeping time perfectly though when I took possession of it a few weeks ago. I looked around the net and the dial with 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 instead of the more common 3, 6, 9, 12 seems to be rather unusual. I would never sell it, but a rough idea of value would be interesting. Any thoughts about this piece anyone? Regards Jaco Strauss Cape Town
The Service Centre will have it fixed and serviced in about two weeks' time. I will post 'after' pictures of the watch to go with these 'before' pics then...
OK, the watch has been serviced and repaired and back on my arm.... View attachment 85754 View attachment 85755 View attachment 85756 View attachment 85757 View attachment 85758
Jaco, I think they've done a good job - you've got a great memento of your dad and every mark on there he put there. It looks better on leather than on that bracelet too...
I also ordered the archive extract and it confirms the South African connection. In addition the manufacturing date was also given as 21.1.1957, which I reckon is quite cool...
I would never sell it, but a rough idea of value would be interesting. Your Father owned it before you = Priceless
Thanks Standy and I agree wholeheartedly. Looking at the watch and remembering how I sat on my dad's lap watching that same smooth sweeping second hand go round, is very special. I still needed a "number" for insurance purposes though, but the watchmaker who serviced it gave me one I could use.
