Hi,

I found this nice Omega 166.002 with a 562 movement. I’ve been scouring the old threads and found that it could be a technical dial. There does not seem to be a ton of info on these. I’ve seen them referred to as speedmaster companion dials as well (maybe only matte black?) I’m not sure if the dial is a very old redial? (Why?) or original. The only odd thing seems to be a lack of the two dots outside of the marker at 12. The dial is similar to a Seamaster 600. Those have white dials but different movements. Any ideas?

Thanks for your time,
Craig

Not a speed master companion. These have the thicker lume plots as per your last photo but IMO should not have a crosshair.

Yours in an original technical dial, but obviously in poor condition.

Thanks, is there any way to clean the dial with destroying it? Or is that permanent staining?

Is it your watch or one you’re considering?

If you’re thinking about buying it, don’t. Unless it’s about 150 quid.

If it’s yours already, although it’s very risky cleaning dials and generally it’s only recommended if you’re willing to gamble with the dial, I’d say this one might be worth trying. The dial is pretty much toast anyway and if a watchmaker tries to remove the lacquer and redo it, you may get lucky and have a half decent result. If it takes most of the print away and ruins it, what have you really lost?

That one is past cleaning. It is what it is

The watch is mine already, it runs well, has sort of a tropical dial feel lol. Thanks for the input. I’ll see if the local watch guy can do a light cleaning as described.

I’m not sure there’s such a thing as a light cleaning?

The only thing I’ve seen is where the lacquer is removed, you cross your fingers that the stains are on this layer and that it doesn’t take much of the print with it, then reapply lacquer.

it’s not really a light clean. Quite aggressive and risky really. But with a dial like yours I’d give it a go.
