Omega Ref 2374 Redial Check: Vintage Buyer Advice

Hi all,

New to the watch world, and probably shouldn't have pulled the trigger on my first more expensive watch until I was 100% sure of it's value - but figured I am going to enjoy this watch no matter what.

So - here is a picture of my new Omega Ref: 2374. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if it's a redial - which seems possible. There is a bit of faint radium burn, but I'm not seeing any other examples of this reference number that have this style of a seconds dial.

Thoughts?

Also - obviously this is a replacement strap, and in the style of what it may have had - but I'd love recommendations on a vintage bracelet I may be able to find that would look appropriate for it if I ever want to dress it up a bit!

Thank you for your brains, experience, and generosity!

Definitly a redial IMO. The Ω symbol is misshapen and the chapter ring printing is sloppy (as well as the sub-dial).
The lume also appears to have been redone at some stage as radium usually goes a yellow/tan colour as it ages.

Nice case on it though, what's the movement look like?

Ordered a tool to open it up tomorrow, as I was only shown a picture of it when I purchased it - but I’ll send a photo then! That’s what I was thinking, and its unfortunate, but still an exciting piece to own even if I overpaid sadly.

How much did you pay for this gem?
talked him down to $950 including taxes. Original asking was $1600, but that seemed high compared to comps and my questions about it. I still think I likely overpaid though if it’s a redial.

Yes, overpay. If you could return it I would. If not, then how much you paid doesn’t matter if you enjoy the watch, and you can just take it as a lesson for next time.

This was redialled a while ago based on the aging of the lume - redials were common during services back in the day and it’s a part of the history of the watch now.

It's not that bad of a deal especially if the movement is a good runner and the movement is reasonably original. Dial refinishing was common generations ago. This ref. isn't especially rare. You could take your time and look for a spare dial that's original and correct and have it installed if you have it serviced down the road.

The case is pretty good. Gentle hand cleaning and polishing with a Cape Cod cloth can really make a difference. I'm sure the thread would enjoy several clear photos of the movement from different angles and good light. How does it run so far?

@RoMash as mentioned by others, a redial on a nice case. Horrible strap 😇 Overall, you have a nice looking watch; personally I will wear on a brown leather [dress] strap and be happy with it -- a redial on this watch would not make me loose any sleep for not being an original dial. Enjoy wearing!

Similar problem here--is this a redial? The Omega and Seamaster on the dial looks a little hand drawn and smudged but I don't know if it is natural aging and fade. Can anyone confirm?

Redial, clear from the fact that “Swiss made” is covered by the 6 o’clock index.

Also, I think best practice is to create a new thread for this.

Welcome aboard.

It’s a rather unfortunate redial. The case is in incredibly bad shape. Heavily polished and I haven’t seen pitting this bad in a while. The movement looks very, very sorry, too.

Please don’t take this the wrong way, I’m genuinely not trying to be disrespectful, but if you cannot spot this as an outstandingly poor example then please protect yourself and do a lot of reading and learning before you hunt - or pay up and buy from a reputable dealer.

As one who has been burned multiple times I agree with the guys..read up, post watches here before you buy and buy the seller. My best buy was from one of our members on this site with a great reputation and knowledge of vintage watches. Good luck.
