I note these go for some pretty hefty prices. Can someone explain to to this Omega-ignoramus why this is such a sought after model?

We have a rule in this forum - no more than 2 Rancheros per member. Sorry, you will need to sell one.....

It was a cheaper model that didn't sell well and was discontinued after a short run. They lost a lot of potential customers because "ranchero" translates to farmer and I guess that turned them off.

Gave a dealer his asking price of $127, on this one in 1998, long before most people knew about the rarity of Rancheros. Back then you could email Omega archives and I got the following information: Sold to US Army (PX Stores) January 28, 1959. Found retail price of $110, online in an old brochure price list. These came out around the same time as the "Professional Series-2913, 2914, and 2915...note they all had the same spade hour hands. Omega Ranchero (2).jpg

Although not marked "Ranchero", picked up this project with correct hands. Use caution when buying the Ranchero! There are many fake dials and hand sets being offered due to the value of original Rancheros. If the dial looks too fresh or lume to bright, it's likely a repro. You can tell the hand sets are repro if the spade is straight at the bottom of the point (note how the originals have a slight curve).

I bought this one a few years ago from a NYC collector, who in turn had bought it from Bill Sohn.

Any example of the centre second one with the Delphine hands , not the broad arrow ones?

Actually, I thought the rule was that you to run a lottery to get rid of the extra one....

I take MSN's point, but for some reason, it's caught the imagination of a certain quarter of Omega enthusiasts. Personally, I find they have quite a distinctive presence in real life and I like them. But there sure are a bunch of fakes on eBay, so much so that I would doubt just about everyone on there (with a few exceptions, of course).
Second thought is that the Ranchero's popularity proves that (relative) rarity is a major driver of cost and that everything is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay. Remember Cartier prices, anyone?

Adam u have a true beauty .... I gree with Lou re the price factor , however, condition of the watch basically determines its value . Ranchero, railmaster and Speedmaster in my opinion is the true triology. U can never get bored with these three models if u wear them in turn. Seamaster 300 is not a very comfortable watch to wear.....

The "non-farmer" variant. The more political correct Seamaster:

A somewhat different hour hand + Another line of text under Omega = 2 or 3 times the value....

Hi All, I've seen a couple of Rancheros recently that have alpha hands. is there a chance that Alpha hands might have come on some Rancheros?
