Great looking piece. Are you talking about the number scratched into the caseback movement side? If so, that’s most likely from a watchmaker who serviced it some time throughout its life. Wear in good health.

Most likely a mark from another watchmaker. Most watchmakers today use felt-tipped markers rather than engravers.

The number in black is felt-tipped and I wonder were its from?
The engraved number is from the old days, probably the seller of the watch Hans Gaarder back in the days

As @gatorcpa said, it's likely from a watchmaker. That would be his code for the job.

That would be nearly impossible. I’m not sure how you were able to figure out the name of the watchmaker that make the older mark.

PS-That is an absolutely beautiful Ranchero!

    Thanks a lot.
The schratced number NUF281 is the number of the shop in Norway. N.U.F. norsk urmakerforbund (Norwegian watchmaker association) 281 is the shop number from that time.
YES and it took a while to figure it out, very simple if you know it, and very difficult to find out such a simple thing.
Its just how it is with this kind of watch

Beautiful Ranchero and what a flea find. Hard to come across rare gems anymore, especially not in that condition.
