Hi Canuck,

Does it have a ring balance? I guess it has rather a cut balance with screws, but the pic was probably taken with the balance rotating.

Bi-metallic, temperature compensating balance, gold (or composition?) screws, Breguet hairspring, micrometer regulator, lever set, motor barrel. Double sunk vitreous enamel dial. I have two of these. They were accepted as railroad approved in Canada, and possibly elsewhere.

..............., motor barrel. ..............

Could you explain the difference between a motor barrel and what I see as a normal mainspring barrel?

Or are they the same and motor barrel is manufacturer terminology?

Cheers

Jim

Thanks! I would have thought so!

With a going barrel, the mainspring is wound at the centre coil by the barrel arbor. The outer end of the mainspring powers the watch at the barrel wall, and the whole barrel with gear teeth turns. The barrel turns as the watch runs. On a watch with a motor barrel, the inner end of the mainspring powers the first wheel (the "main" wheel) of the watch. The barrel turns as the watch is wound, and remains stationary as the watch runs. The main wheel is turned by the centre coil of the mainspring. The main wheel turns to power the watch. If the spring were to break, the energy of the rapidly expanding spring is released against the barrel wall, at the same time, torsion on the main driving wheel is released. No damage to gears.

Just another quick question on this watch, the main spring seems to be gone on this watch what would be the part number for the replacement and secondly does anyone have a ball park figure on a service cost for a watch such as this.

There is no part number for this mainspring. What has to happen?
A watchmaker will remove the old mainspring and measure the depth and thickness of the original and then search for an appropriate replacement. Considering the number of styles of mainspring for watches of this age, it's usually a long process to get the right one.

Ball park?

Where?

New Jersey? Oklahoma? Nigeria?

Some suppliers will have mainsprings suitable for a 19''. Ask them with the caliber reference and that should be fine.

You can typically order mainsprings 2 ways - by measurements or by caliber. I'm working on a 19TI right now and since Omega hasn't sold springs for these for decades, I simply asked my local supplier for a mainspring for a 19TI, and they did the rest.

By the way, many watchmakers will not used customer supplied parts, so it's best to take the watch to someone and let them source the spring rather than buying and then finding they won't use it. Watchmakers look for these parts all the time and have networks for finding things that the average Joe won't have, so let them source it - it's their job.

Cheers, Al
