Direct message from friendly insider:

“It’s been an 8500 in the mil insignia POs for ages. I thought you knew about watches 😉 “.

Well that’s me told then 😁

On the SAS watch... surely only worth what someone will pay... and who wants to walk around with an SAS insignia’d watch if they weren’t in the SAS? ::facepalm1::

So, what I’m getting from here is that this and others like this are overpriced and overhyped...

Always a little further..on that auction estimate!

As Padders will attest (if he's the Padders I think he is) there are a million people out there who'll happy claim to have served with UKSF, but who couldn't find their own backsides with both hands. We call them "Walts".

I agree with your point wholeheartedly but I don't think I am the Padders you think I am. I have no military experience, a few connections certainly but I wasn't being ironic above when I inferred that my profession is rather less shooty.

The SAS watches definitely have value. Issued or not they will have a following and I am sure 10k will be achievable. The Walter Mitty thing never hurt Mil Subs!

Mil-subs were issued. Mil-SM300s too There is a massive difference between those and something like this.

I agree, and it is too modern for my tastes, but I have seen these fetch a good price before. The SAS regiment watches carry quite a following.

I thought the SAS motto was "Who Dares Wins." Isn't "Always a little further" from a poem?

It's from "The Golden Road To Samarkand" by James Elroy Flecker. It starts "We are the pilgrims Master, we shall go / Always a little further/ It may be / Across that mountain barr'd with snow / Across that angry or that shimmering sea..."
I believe it's engraved on the memorial clock at the Regiment's base in Hereford but I may be wrong...?

Thing is why do people want these pieces? Why do you want to wear a watch that says SAS when..your not in the SAS..Thats the tacky part for me.
Then again I guess you could say the same thing about the moon watch lol maybe a bit different as its celebrating mans achievement.
For me something like this army thing should be a memory you have and that is something physical attached to it.

I don’t really understand why the value is in question. It is a rare and normally unobtainable item connected to an elite regiment. Only available in very limited numbers and not for sale to the general public.
That makes it special and collectible. You don’t buy a Mil Sub because it makes it look like you were in the army but because it is rare and to many desirable.
If it doesn’t make the reserve I will be very surprised and expect it to make high teens.
I have a friend currently serving will a Bremont version who was offered £25k for his watch!

I have 2 military Bremonts. Have to show proof of service and connection to buy one. They sell them at 40% off retail. If you sell them, it voids the warranty. And you have to engrave them. Not sure why anyone other than a Navy F/A-18 test pilot would want one.

I totally agree. Its the fact that its not available to the public and that a lot of adult males secretly wish they were a special forces operator. i reckon it will go for £21300.

The only thing that would make sense to me is if one's father served in the SAS - in that case I could see someone prizing a watch like this to honor their dad. Other than that, I don't get it.

@tyrantlizardrex

So we are both right/wrong lol.

I’d seen the enamel/glass CB before on SMP’s not the PO of any gen.

It's a super cool piece, but I'd never wear it. Too much respect for the SAS, and nothing but contempt for poseurs/pretenders/fakes. Emblems and badges for elite service units are hard won and demonstrate a commitment few people can muster. Since I don't buy watches that I won't wear, that seals it for me. I'm out on this one. I'd wear a COMEX Rolex, but not an SAS Seamaster. I didn't earn it.

It’s interesting to see where people draw the line, is any military watch out or just certain ones. No one questions the value or collectibility of Mil Subs or the Dirty Dozen.

Comex divers must be seen in the same ‘Walter Mitty’ light if you are wearing one and not the professional diver who bought it?

Moon watches worn on JB champions or bits of Velcro? Who do you think you are Neil Armstrong?

Who is the judge, and are they just missing that we are all equally guilty of this behaviour?

Comex, mill subs, and the dozen are issued pieces. This is not issued just a bone stock special order.

This was the attitude towards Military Subs in the 1980s. Jewellers would convert them back by cutting out fixed lugs and buffing out the engravings, changing sword hand to Mercedes hands.
If you are getting rid of yours I can give you RRP less 40% and I will generously take on the servicing responsibility.
It’s only because I am thinking of applying to be a test pilot and I think having the equipment already could swing it for me.
