My watch agent sent me pictures of two Omega Pie Pans but he has not opened the watch to inspect the movement. They are being sold by the widow of an estate. The 18k with snap back case is being offered for $1.5k and the all steel with screw back at $550. Both are running well. I am a newbie on pie pans so not sure also what is the reference number and if the price is within reason? Many thanks for your inputs again.

Without seeing the inside to see the movement condition it's difficult to give any advice as to price.

That SS has a real "cute" second hand.....

The 18K is cheap.... if the dial is original. Heck even if redial. Could you take closer picture?

Well once again this prompts me to think there are two kinds of collectors.
Those who want as close to NOS, the triple C men who have watches so perfect they cannot wear them.
Then we have people who appreciate these things, with plenty of character and wear, that honestly show their history.

What I do not like is the partially restored watches shown by dealers who clean things up so that the watch then falls between two stools, neither original nor perfect.

I too know nothing about these watches.

However I don't think you would go too far wrong buying them and learning. While I advocate research before buying, I don't seem to learn quite as well as when I buy...

Here is a collection of watches that all taught me more than the value of acquisition:

$1500 is a good price for the 18k but condition is not the best...it looks like someone tried to clean the dial. I forget the 1st reference but the 2nd should be a 14381. $550 is a little high considering condition.

why would the snap back be higher than the screw back? the only example i have; a 10 k gold (base metal upper case) that looked perfect, but the threads had been striped. AND gluded.

Because it is solid 18K gold, including the dial.

The other watch is gold capped. Only the bezel is solid gold, and that is only 14K.

Difference is solely in the gold value.

What a great honest response. It is sensational to hear from the (ahem) experienced, and to find out that they seem to have made the same sort of mistakes that I am making. The old "buy first and ask questions later" approach is a slightly painful way to learn. Thanks Spacefruit

I might add, my very first 2998 has a service dial, new hands, and a seamaster movement.

    It saved me a fortune
