Love them or hate them they are here to stay..... I only have one and I bought it because I thought it looked great and I wanted a speedy. Just for fun I would like to see your list of the top 5 or 10 that you think are the best. Not necessarily in the order of what they are worth but how you view them as nice watches to own. Here is my one
I don’t know about top five but the Met edition is verrrry low for me.....the added cost over a FOIS for a NATO strap? What am I missing?
Just the whole buzz the Speedy Tuesday 1 created on release. Kicking back at 10:30pm Australian time and watching the 4 hrs unfold.( which turned into 24hrs with people refreshing browsers till their fingers hurt ) Snagged #1861 in the first 5 minutes. #1 This one has grown on me the more I have seen it on here each time. #2: Solely judged on the fact that I own only these two.
1. Soyuz 35th 2.Speedmaster 60th 3.ST1 4.Gemini IV 40th 5. Silver Snoopy/Apollo X1 45th Couple of pictures from ones I own:
I own absolutely no LE's but if I could go back in time then I would pick up in order of favouritism 1. Snoopy 2. Ultraman 3. Speedy Tuesday 4. Apollo 11 - 35th Anniversary 5. Apollo 11 - 50th Anniversary In reserve FOIS and the new 321 Special Edition
Popularity/desirability is reflected by market value. A watch which price is currenty almost 4x original retail price in only 4 yrs time, which else but silver snoopy @ #1
My List: #1 original BA145.022 …still a dream! ... #2 "new BA145" = Apollo11 50th Anni Goldie: #3 Apollo 11 45th Titanium: #4 The Snoopy One: #5 All the Mission LEs (here the Gemini VII): # a lot more are wonderful timepieces!
Below are my top 5 limited editions and the reasons why. Firstly though, I almost never like dials with logos / images / mission patches on the 9 o'clock subdial so that rules out a number of Speedmaster LEs. Images on the 9 o'clock subdial IMHO take away from the watch without adding anything meaningful back. ST2 is the exception because the Ultraman image is only visible under black light. Buzz Aldrin's backside on the Apollo 11 50th is the main reason that LE wasn't for me. I also generally don't like dials with lots of superficial additions which means LEs such as the Silver Snoopy are out. Saying this might be heresy to some and, with prices of the SS where they are, I'm probably in the minority but it is what it is. So, the top 5 in no particular order: Speedymoon: Not technically a LE but rare and special. A moonphase on the Moonwatch makes sense, particularly when adding a 12 o'clock subdial makes the overall dial look more symmetrical and the blue & gold on the moonphase disc pop against the black dial. This being the 1st moonphase complication used on the Speedmaster makes it more special. Apollo-Soyuz 35th (meteorite dial). This watch looks stunning with the meteorite dial, and having a dial that came from space on the Moonwatch makes more sense than other brands that also use this dial material. The caseback is one of the most special and was created without needing to add any additional exotic materials. If there's one slight negative, it is the sapphire crystal with the milky ring but perhaps sapphire was used to give a more crystal clear view of the meteorite than the warmer softer effect you get with Hesalite. Italian Albino 40th Speedmaster anniversary: The cream coloured dial with black outlines around the indexes looks elegant, and the dial is largely a reverse of the normal black dial. The rhodium movement is visible through the caseback. Only 500 of these makes them rare. I actually prefer this dial to the Mitsukoshi panda. Japan Racing 2004: I really like the racing dial and the Speedmaster of course was first created for motor racing. The original late '60s racing dial is not price accessible any more. IMHO rounding out a Speedmaster LE top 5 should be one out of precious metal and I can't decide between the white gold Moonphase (3689.30), which is not a limited edition but rare, and the new Apollo XI 50th full gold version. Looking beyond Speedmasters, #5 would be the Seamaster PO-LM-LE. 3689.30 -->
It might be time to start a bottom 5 ranking. Case in point: https://omegaforums.net/threads/speedmaster-rory-mcilroy-special-edition.98592/
@queriver : Even though there’s no overlap between your list and mine, I can’t disagree with any of your picks. I’ve always lusted after those Racing dialed watches, as well as the Meteorite dialed ones. I also put together a ‘better’ version of the Italian Albino, because I thought it needed some color: And I’m prejudiced toward Speedymoons and the white gold Moonphases, which I consider grossly under appreciated amongst collectors. My prejudice has led me to have one of each in my collection. Problem is, it’s too nice to wear much.
@Lou P has a great graphic. I think Omega should have used hesalite for the Soyuz 35th, that would have been my number 1. My list. 1. Gemini IV 2. CK2998 3. 18k Skeleton 4. bi-metal Italian My list if I had unlimited funds I would add the Apollo Yellow Gold from 1969
My list ... 1. 1969 Yellow Gold - what else, similar watches were given to moon walkers. 2. Apollo 11 25th anniversary white gold - only WG Chronometer. 3. Apollo 11 50th anniversary Yellow Gold 4. Soyuz 5. Gemini IV
