Omega leather strap expectations...

Hello,

I am looking for a sanity check...

On my Seamaster Auga Terra GMT (with the leather strap 98000309), a replacement strap was purchased from the local OB (USD$395). Yes, it wore it daily. I work in an office setting, I have a sedentary lifestyle, any chance something was going to scratch / ding / touch my SATGMT, it would get removed and put away. Yes, I live in the Southern states in the USA, but, I don't think that after 18 months of wearing my SATGMT the leather strap should start to delaminate. Mind you, I replaced this strap 18 month ago for the very same reason, delamination.

I contacted the OB and the individual I purchased the leather strap from, his response to my "Observation"...

Regarding the wear on leather or genuine skin straps, there is not a set time of expectation for wear. There are a number of factors that play into how long they wear. If they are worn everyday under conditions with humidity and moisture, they have a shorter longevity. If you are not getting good longevity out of straps my suggestion would be switch to a metal bracelet or maybe a nylon strap. Either of these would be more suitable for the conditions mentioned previously.

Humidity and moisture?

This strap never saw water, washing my hands, the SATGMT was put in my pocket. As far as humidity, most of the Eastern states of the USA are humid.

I want to call "Hog Wash" on the OB's response, especially since I've seen two of these Omega brands deteriorate in 36 months.

Is this normal wear and tear?

That does seem like unusual wear based on my experience with leather straps, including Omega OEM. The leather strap which came on my Speedmaster FOIS is still going strong and it is 6 years old. I live in Florida, so get lots of humidity year round here. However, I also have not worn the Speedy on the original strap for 6 years straight. I have switched it out regularly for NATOs, other leather straps, and bracelets. But it has probably seen at least 2 years of wear in that time.

of course, wearing the same strap day in and day out is different then wearing it for a month or so, then letting it rest.

Another thought. How tight do you wear your strap? If you wear it very tight, you will be putting extra stress on the area where it has delaminated from your wrist flexing.

Yes, Im in Georgia and have lived in all parts of Florida...we have humidity here. I do not wear any of my timepieces tight on my wrist. I like it to be almost to the point of being able to rotate.

Am I expecting too much from an authentic OEM Omega leather strap purchased from the local OB?

Is it possible to replace the leather strap with the Planet Ocean rubber strap? Will that fit the existing deployment clasp?

salt, water build up and loss of oil are the enemies here. Just like leather shoes. leather worn one day on and a day or two off and treated once a month with leather food will make a big difference to life

I don’t know if you’re expecting too much from the OEM strap, but I do think that all OEM straps are obscenely overpriced and I think that you can find comparable quality from aftermarket manufacturers for way less money.

I also wonder if it is a result of making the end of the watch strap mold to the case. That will also put more stress on the end than just a normal straight strap. It does look nice, but if you have to emplacements every 2 years, a regular strap might be better.

Also consider your strap material. Cordovan and teju lizard wear incredibly well compared to most leather and other exotic skins.

This is why I would like to know if the Planet Ocean rubber would work....

Unfortunately the Omega Oyster is about USD$1,095.00
