Omega Geneve f300 - what would you do?

I took a plunge on this on Sunday. It wasn’t an impulse buy because I spotted it a few days before and spent a bit of time researching the web. My gamble was on price and condition. The seller's photos were very poor.

It arrived today. It runs accurately. I cleaned it up, it looks (imho) like new and had the original buckle and strap from 1972.

And, as you do, I opened the caseback and checked inside ….. and the caseback is marked 198.031 (the day date version) not, as I expected, 198.030 (the date only version).

I’m not going to return it (assuming it carries on running as it does) but my dilemma is …. do I just forget about the caseback difference or, do I trawl eBay looking for a 198.030 caseback? There’s one on offer for £79.00.

So, what would anyone do about the caseback?

It would not bother me, but if you have a bit of OCD then it will no doubt nag! Is it worth another £80 being chucked at it?

Good luck (nice looking, I got one similar from @nzshadow in the lock down pass forward).

If this were a highly collectible watch, then I would say sure- it would be worth tracking down a lone case back or whole parts watch to steal a back in decent shape. But other than the OCD factor, I see no reason to change it provided it fits properly.

Nice.
I wouldn't bother with the case back being (slightly) incorrect. It's hidden inside, you'll never see it. Save your cash.

I've the day date version... the blue dials are just fantastic.

Why can’t the Seamaster 60’s of this same vintage age like that?!?! They all look like shit!

Ignore it. There have been a number of double-stamped casebacks over the years, maybe they just didn't get around to adding the extra number. Great watch, I love the hummers! And I'd personally switch out (and keep) the original strap, maybe going for something that would complement the awesome blue dial...

I've kept it but, and would have used it but, sadly ….. it’s race is run 🙁

Update - as I mentioned above, there was a caseback on eBay at £79.99.

Apart from pressing the ‘added to Watchlist' heart I did nothing.

A couple of hours later, I’m offered the chance of a lifetime, or at least the caseback for £51.00.

I countered with a £35.00 offer - and my hand's been bitten off and I’ve paid.

I wasn’t really going to bother so now I’m not sure whether to be thrilled or rueful.

Bloody watches 😡

😁

I was going to chime in and say leave it alone but it looks like I'm too late. Beautiful watch. Nice pickup!

As someone with borderline OCD I definitely understand the need to get the correct back, glad you got it sorted!

Well, not all of them actually 😀

You did the right thing....Only I would've been stupid enough to pay the original asking price.

It was a chancy buy - I was so relieved with all the correct bits of the watch I wasn’t hugely bothered but, one of the things you start doing if you’re a member of OF is checking movements, casebacks and minutiae that I never dreamed about before joining OF 😲

That seems to have turned out well. I anticipate that I’ll be putting the 198.031 on the sales forum at some stage 😀

I would buy the correct case back.

Thanks, and I have and have fitted it, so I’m sure I’ll be selling the incorrect one, above 😀
