Omega Constellation 14381

Hi guys,

I found a nice looking Connie 14381 on Catawiki the other day. I was the highest bidder (£800) but I did not meet the reserve price.
I then found the watch on eBay, selling for £1400. The seller is willing to accept a lower offer, at £1100, but I find this a little expensive and would like to get your opinion on this.

The +: Pie Pan, sharp edges, omega clasp (I need to go through the dedicated thread to make sure this one is original), has been serviced a year ago (I don't have the details on what's been done, the watch maker seems to have good reviews on Google), comes with a box, cross hair dial, correct crown (I believe).

The -: Dial with patina (I love that but I know this usually lowers the watch value), scratch on the case back, minor scratches on the case.

What's your opinion on this watch please?

What about the asking price (£1100)? I live in UK and I have not found any pie pan cheaper really, at least not so far. This one being serviced (assuming it's been well done) that one thing less to spend.

Thanks all.

Jerome

The crown is a service replacement, original would’ve been a flat feet logo example. The clasp should be a little later than the watch, these aren’t as valuable as the earlier (correct) examples but the difference is minute compared to the value of the watch. Just mentioning this since you asked specifically.
Price is ok for a pie pan dial. Personally, the discoloration of the it, especially since it’s uneven and some spots are worse than others, would put me off, though.

edit: Why is the rotor so dirty / full of spots, only a year after a service? As if someone sneezed on the open movement. 😁

I’ve seen this one. The price isn’t terrible, especially as it comes with a box, but I think the dial isn’t the best thing in the world, and looks aged in the wrong way. But then to someone else it might be beautiful! Just not for me.

I don't particularly like this specimen as the dial is quite damaged and the case unattractive, but I don't find the price terribly offensive. What you offered in the auction is where it's at, IMO. The (incorrect) box could be sold off for around £50 if you wanted to recoup some money.

For interest’s sake, what is this box for?

Price of 1100 is reasonable to me. I happen to like the dial damage/patina/wabi sabi. Case shows wear but remains sharp. Crown and buckle are genuine Omega, even if perhaps not totally original to the watch. Medallion looks good. I don’t love the lume on the hands and some of the wear/spotting on the movement, but overall seems like a decent wearable example.

If the dial were in better condition, then £1100 would be a good price for a 14381 pie-pan at the moment.
But I'm in the not-so-keen-on-that-dial camp.

The movt serial puts the age of the watch at around 1961
The question is, has the bridge, rotor and plate with cal and serial been added to a newer movt or has the bridge and rotor and the more modern swan neck regulator (with the blip on the end) been added to on older cal 551 movt?

I could just about live with that dial if I'd bought it cheap, but to me it looks dry and unattractive and coupled with the tired case and chipped lugs I'm afraid I'd say at anything over €650 it would be a hard pass.

To be fair, that wouldn’t be a bad price for a pie pan in (apparently) original condition, even if it is a bit tired looking

I would call it damage and this is patina.

A patina vs damage discussion? Oh boy! 🍿

That watch is in rough condition. You know the actual value ... £800. It's your choice if you want to pay more, or wait patiently for something better.

Thanks again for your replies, always quick, always accurate, always pinpointing what I've missed (crown, clasp etc).

The initial £800 is also what I thought the watch was worth, but so far I've not seen anything at that price in that condition or in the £1100-1200 in good condition (seems to be more around £1500 from what I've seen), that's what I wanted your opinion.

But you've all said it's too expensive for it's condition, so I'll follow your advice and wait patiently as you've suggested Dan.

On a separate topic, I went today to the Somlo Omega Vintage shop in London (don't know if they are known sellers here), they had 2 amazing 168.005 pie pans, but selling for £3000 (steel, BoR bracelet) and £4500 (solid gold, leather strap), quite expensive, but it was a good experience to have my hands on some very nice ones.

I was just there myself today as well! I actually tried on one - the steel one on the leather strap. A lot smaller and more delicate in person than they look in photos online.
