    Hi Everyone,

Can I have your expert opinion on this watch, whether it is a genuine omega 2493. The movement look similar to the other 2493 I’ve seen, but I am not an expert. And I am not too sure what you think of the dial.

    Thank you.

My issue would be the 80-micron case which is worn on the lugs and is pretty beat up.

    What's the price?

The damage to the case is especially noticeable from the side. I'm not crazy about the blistering on the dial, but maybe this is just nit-picking, and it's not really visible to the naked eye. I suspect the watch would face up well in person and it could be a nice-looking watch to wear at the right price.

Thank you all for your valuable comments. I am hoping not to pay more than £400. But I will keep you posted how it goes.

Cool little piece, not perfect, but as others have said, the price should reflect this!

Not really and it looks as if it has already seen some polishing. Before commiting to anything, make sure that the gold on the lugs haven't worn off as this is where wear is usually worst.

As to any perceived deficiencies with the subject watch, how close to perfect can we reasonably expect a 65 or 70 year old watch to be? Polished? Yes! Dial not absolutely perfect. Yes! But in the eyes of many who might otherwise be offering this watch for sale, what sort of exaggerated claims might we expect? I’d buy it and wear it just like it is and enjoy it! There are millions of watches much newer than this one that are ten feet down in a landfill, somewhere! No shame in not being perfect! Don’t polish it, just make certain it is in good running order, make certain the case is clean, and enjoy it! It is a very nice watch!

Absolutely spot on. The only point in taking about these potential issues is to establish a rough market value - if you (like the OP) aren't too sure of the finer details of a reference and pay top money for something with signs of wear that traditionally devalue a watch, you could well end up feeling a bit dissapointed. Best to walk into a purchase well-informed :)

This should be posted more often.

Thank you all for your useful advise. I have learnt a lot and I agree it is better to be informed and decide what budget I should spend on the watch.

    Hi Guys,

Hope I am not asking too much. I am also looking at this watch, I guess it will be either or. Could I please have your opinions? Sorry for the hassle but I have been looking for about 4 weeks for my first vintage omega and have been very indecisive. Hopefully I can get my first watch soon at the right price.

Manual winder. Has been worn without a case back gasket. Made by Omega toward the end of Omega, and its buyout by the Swatch Group. Much slimmer than the self winder of the same era, because it lacks the automatic wind mechanism. One advantage, is it does have the date feature. I think I am safe in saying that this one is far less collectible than the other one you are looking at. I know which one I’d buy. Even if the manual winder was half the price. Buy the price you prefer? Buy the watch you prefer? Is that really a difficult choice?

Thank you! I think I am overanalysing too much and you are right I should just buy the one I like and can afford.

How is it that the things we prefer are so often more than we can “afford”? Divert some funds from one of your other hobbies. You have a long time to wear the wrong watch. And that will bother far longer than your memory of the money you saved, if you skimp.
