I have this omega buckle on one of my late 50s/ early 60s Omega Geneves. I don’t think it’s original but it pairs nicely.

It’s solid 9k gold as per the hallmarks. I was wondering what watch could this have come with or perhaps more easier to answer what period? Could it be an earlier one?

Ollie 😀

Very similar shape - Could they have been made by the same company on behalf of the respective brands?

Your buckle has a Birmingham hallmark, so is U.K. produced.
If you can decipher what the date letter is (the right hand mark) you can find out exactly which 12 month period it was produced.

Wow that's fantastic - thank you - I had a quick google and came across this website which look really useful!

Thanks for pointing me in that direction another useful website for the arsenal 😀

I can just about make out a "M" it's very difficult to differentiate the font.

Based on the website or this chart below, that would date it to either 1936 or 1962 or 1986. My guess is that it's probably 1936 or 1962. It appears to be ever so slightly italic like the 1962 one, but I can't see any tails on the top of the M. That said I think that’s the closest. Do you think that’s a fair conclusion? 😀

It’s got to be 1936 👍
My Rolex one was certainly no later than 1940’s

It isn’t usually so difficult to decipher a hallmark date letter but I’m struggling with this one.
It looks slimmer than the earlier M (and as you say, more italic) but doesn’t appear to have the tails of the later mark.

The buckle itself, stylistically, is earlier in style but you have to remember that due to British reactionary tastes, UK Omega products were often produced for many years after they were originally designed.

Here is a better illustration of the two marks in question side by side and a blow up of the date letter, perhaps others can offer their opinion?

I'd be shocked if that buckle was pre-war.

Look at how the earliest Swiss made Omega buckles from around that period was marked; none had a logo that prominent.

Just have found this on google and it says its 1959, looks to be the same buckle with same marks, albeit in slightly different places, it's described on this ad as 1959 - so with this in mind, the potential dates we have narrowed down and the UK being reactive in their tastes I can happily conclude this is 1961/2. Plus that would date it about right for the watch it is on after all, plus its a rose gold colour just like its paired watch 😀

Surprised by that as thought it would be earlier, well done on your research 😀

I have exactly that buckle, same design same manufacturer. Mine is hallmarked mid 1950s so that I too would say that the OP one is deffo a 1961-2 example rather than earlier. These were often originally paired with locally made gold Dennison cased Omega models, which makes sense since the cases were also made in Birmingham.

There were 2 sorts of UK hallmarked 9k buckles made

the earlier type, a rounded design like the OP’s buckle, was made up until 1962. The earliest hallmaked one that i have come across is from 1955 ( but there may be earlier ones out there- havent looked for a while now)

then from around 1963, a square design was introduced

they used to be on ebay for around 70-100 gb pounds, but recently, are on offer for silly money ( have seen them sold for over 240 gb pounds)

Sometimes, its best to look at the shape of the box surrounding the letter first, so you narrow down the date range. Admit this isnt very easy sometimes, especially with blurry photos, and indeed it does need a good loupe even with the buckle in hand
