As is sometimes the case when buying watches from auctions I have just recently pulled apart a 561 from a constellation and discovered along with an absurd amount of oil that the date indicator guard(1554) and date jumper/spring on this watch are those of a 565. Which explains why the quick change date function was never working at least (I must take the small victory in my problem solving at least).

This discovery has led me to be looking at the date indicator driving wheel(1564). From what I can tell the original 4 part spring loaded date driving wheel was updated at some point. I was only ever able to find the initial service manual for the 561 so I was wondering if anyone could shed any light on both how the original design fails/causes problems as I figure there's a reason the design changed, but also if the service advice ever changed to use the parts from the 565.

I checked two parts movements and both have the spring loaded type. 560 and 610. Interesting that your 561 isn't spring loaded, so I'm guessing that it was changed after the movements were created as the 611 was the last model to use it

Borel says - Discontinued - Use A/6162 which I guess is the one you have.

I tried to move the spring loaded part, but didn't want to push to much to avoid damaging it. Didn't budge. Don't see a reason for the springs. The pin plate would need to be pressed on tight to prevent it from turning, so what did the springs do except to add to the complexity of the part.

Could be that is why it was changed

There are 4 different versions of the date indicator driving wheel for these calibers...you have the first version.

Here's information on the second version, which was spring loaded:

And here's information on the last updates...

Date indicator guard is also updated.

Mystery solved! I had assumed I had a newer part as I got an identical date indicator driving wheel in the last 565 I serviced.

Didn't even occur to me that I had the older one.
Now to source replacement parts...

Thanks for the input DON and Al
