Hey Omega friends!

I'm looking to buy my first Omega, and I have seen this one for sale at ~US$1500. Some photos of it attached.

Being new to Omega's, is this a good price?

Is there anything I need to look out for? Any questions I should ask before purchasing?

I don't want a lemon obviously.

Thanks so much!

It’s a fairly good looking watch @TripFountain.

It would be useful if you could provide some additional pictures, such as inner case back, movement and the full watch from the front. ( one of the most important things on a dogleg is the condition of the lugs. )

From what we can see, the sun burst dial with onyx inserts looks good with some slight bubbling in the lacquer.
The medallion looks good.
It has a replacement crown.
The bezel looks as though it is a little soft around the edges.

Depending on the rest of case and movt $1500 wouldn’t be too expensive for a dogleg pie pan nowadays.

Welcome

What has your research shown?

I'd love to see all the Original pictures you collated on this Reference, placed side by side with this one you show with all your explanation of the differences-if any- along with your conclusions.

I welcome the education

Thank you so much @Peemacgee ! I'll see if I can get photos of the movement, here is a better photo of the front. Do the lugs look ok?

If the movement looks ok, how much do you think this kind of watch is worth @Peemacgee ?

Thanks again!

As you can see, the lugs are quite soft and the facets are no longer so well defined.
The watch probably looks better on the wrist than in macro photos.
( the out of focus angled shot shows the lugs better than the straight on shot)

Note- there is some discolouration to the right hand side of the dial, possibly from historical water ingress.

sales value often depends on whose selling.

Thanks again @Peemacgee, that's really helpful, the watch is from a dealer in Japan.

I only have these photos to go on. I don't want to be ripped off. From the condition you see and the nature of the dealer, do you have any thoughts on the value? I'm not sure how if this watch is in good condition for it's age or not.

Any insights very gratefully received.

Best place to check value would be recent SOLD listings on eBay.

Still need to see the movt but bearing in mind that you are likely to have import costs ( to the uk that would be ~25%) $1500 would be an absolute max. ( and a bit too much IMHO)

Brilliant thank you. I didn't realise the impact of import tax, that really amps up the cost. That's super helpful, will have a think on it. Would prefer to see the watch in person tbh before making an purchase.

As others have said, this is a fair to good example of a 168.005, but not without some warts. I think that with some patience you are likely to find better examples in the $1,500 range. Several have come up for sale on OF in the past year that were in better condition than this one for the same money or less.
