·Many gold buckles have been lost (stolen) over the years by a watchmaker replacing a strap and keeping the original gold buckle and giving the watch back with a cheaper plated buckle. One of the reasons you often find vintage pieces that don't have the original buckle.
Wow you'd think that the customers' would notice! I only have one original 9k gold buckle incidentally on the watch I am wearing today and I would definitely notice it gone! For such tiny things I find that they are not cheap even in auction! Often selling over £100. I was lucky that mine came on a watch that I bought about 3 years ago. To date it was only the second watch I have bought with original buckle and the only one that has been solid gold.
