Why? You can't take it off before you go swimming or take a shower? BTW, showering with even a water resistance watch is a bad idea as soap can go between the seals where plain water can't get in.
If your lifestyle is such that you can't think of what you are doing in advance, then vintage watches are not for you.
Get a Casio G-shock or a crappy Invicta. Then if it gets screwed up from water damage, throw it away and buy a new one.
Sorry, rant over.

Its part of our love affair, you take it off and slip it in your pocket before you wash your hands, or it starts raining. Its part of it's charm and you get used to it. You will build a bond with your watch and soon you will enjoy having reasons to fiddle with it.. Trust me..馃槈
It may be possible to have the seals changed and the watch pressure tested. You'll probably need to replace the crown and crystal too.
If the watch passes the pressure test, you can consider it "water resistant". However, since you have a 50+ year old watch, parts will become less available as time passes. When something goes the next time, it may not be able to be fixed.
So like the old Mafiosi in "Casino" said, "Why take a chance?".
