I doubt anybody got anything. Seller has 4 feedbacks with no sales.

 

Hence my hesitation and never fully comfortable relying on eBay to back up... but I love that reference and with better pics the patina could be really sweet...

 

Hmmm... “buyer” backed out and now I’m being offered it...

 

I get that often when bidding on Ebay. Sometimes I even get the offer minutes after it closed. LOL. clearly they have shill bidders.

 

Apparently buyer backed out after realizing the bracelet is not included. I’m considering...

After much back and forth, and many more red flags (including asking for new pics) someone else decided to take the risk. And it might end up being real and a good deal, or not and eBay/PayPal will eventually step in, but I wasn’t willing to deal with the potential headache. (Although of course if someone here bought it and it does show up - I WANT PICS!)

 

Dial looked pretty rough

 

One man’s rough could be another man’s patina. I say “could be” because the pics weren’t great, but to me it looked like a cool overall yellowing with some darkness around the markers. Could make for a unique look, which I’m always after on vintage dials, outside of proper dress watches that are nice to have as clean as possible.

 

the watch looks like a put together. I've never seen that bezel on that model before and that particular movement is so expensive to source parts for that I would be very careful messing around with such an example that clearly has been played with. the fact the seller offed the bracelet separately means he/she is handy and knows what's hot and what's not.

 

Very good points that definitely ran through my mind and played into my hesitation. The bezel I was able to find online on gold versions of the reference but not on steel. And I definitely hear you re: the 1030 movement. Seller claimed it was fully serviced and running well... but at one point said it was serviced in 2016 and later changed that to 2019. One of the many red flags.

 

These aren't all that rare at this price level are they? This mid 50s OP 6581 passed through my hands last month. I considered keeping it as a doer upper but the dial deterioration and obvious tired state of the movement made me reconsider. I bought and sold it at less than the price of the ebay one, was glad to come out ahead. Did I make a booboo?

 

as long as you came out ahead then it's all good

yours looks better than the ebay example. nice original bezel and the dial is more than presentable. however I think you did the right thing moving it along since those movements could end up a headache. the same basic look can be had with a slightly newer reference # equipped with a 15xx movement which is much easier to source replacement parts for.

 

That was partly my thinking, parts for the 1030 are few and far between and can be very expensive. That movement was used in early Subs etc so parts suppliers gouge. I'd got someone lined up to service it in whose abilities I place a great deal of faith but didn't want to get stuck with a big repair tab. It just wasn't pretty enough to keep.

 

Sadly to get these for the $1000 range, which is what the deal would have been, is rare these days. In my experience. If it’s on a piece where the movement was truly freshly serviced.

 

Agreed on the 15xx. All in all feeling fine about my decision not to pull the trigger.

 

our watch tech in Cebu city serviced a similar example for us a couple years or so back and it's still working fine. we liked our watch as it's an unusual example but I wouldn't pay too much for another non-runner today. I just don't feel as lucky anymore.
