If you have heard the previous generation 802 D2's, these are a big step up from those in clarity. We actually considered getting a pair of the previous 802's as they were offering them at a steal of a price because they wanted to make room for the new line, but the 803 D3's were so much better we paid the premium...just to give you some idea of how good these are...馃槈

Yes, the D3's are definitely a nice improvement over the D2's. The speaker was redesigned from the ground up. Aside from the tweeter they really have very little in common with the older ones.

Speaking of nice speakers. Here is a picture of the TinTin I bought today sitting on a new Wilson speaker we are breaking in at work.

To @Archer the D series B&W's are unreal, but even more unforgiving than the earlier Nautilus models IMO. Paired up with a good tube pre or punchier solid state they sing, but on anything less than that I found them just too much. Paradigm, Dynaudio, Sonus Faber and KEF, while not as dynamic, are all nice alternatives. And that's not even touching toes into the electrostatic pond....

Speakers (or one single component) don't make a system, so of course everything has to have balance and work well together, right from the power conditioner through to the speakers, and out into the room. Buying these triggered an amplification upgrade certainly (Classe power amp, 300 WPC, thermally stabilized with a fan, etc.), but over a year in to ownership now and I could not be happier with them. We auditioned a number of speakers from different brands (Focal, Linn, and some others I can't recall right now) and these came out on top. Never been an electrostatic fan personally but the last set I listened to were probably some Martin Logan's 20+ years ago...

These B&W's are certainly revealing, which as Larry points out can be good or bad depending on the source material.

Yes completely new and for a change no more yellow cones, which I am thankful for (sounded good but looked horrible). And with the aluminum frame, they are heavy beasts pushing 150 lbs each!

Those Wilson's...Yvette's or Sabrina's maybe? Just going by the cabinet shape...once heard a pair of WATT/Puppies but that was a long time ago. Would love to hear some of their newer models.

Cheers, Al

Good eye. Those are the Yvette's. They are still breaking in and sound wonderful. I still have to get them properly placed and peel the plastic wrapping off.

But I know that when the transport goes on our Linn Unidisk player, getting it fixed won't likely be worth it, so that's why we are looking at streaming options right now. I will also get all the CD's I have ripped to high quality and use a music server...

Cheers, Al[/QUOTE]

I am using a Sonos box modified by Wyred4Sound to deliver WAV files that are held on a NAS in my cupboard. This then runs through a PrimaLuna Dialogue Premium and Focal Electra 1008.

This is the best sounding music I have ever had the pleasure to own.

The other easy looking system for music streaming is BlueSound. They also have the ability to stream higher res music.

Love those B&W

Thanks - we have some time to decide (I hope!) but after gong to a demo of the newest Linn Klimax DSM with Katalyst last fall that is at the top of the list right now:

http://www.whathifi.com/linn/klimax-ds-3/review

I was surprised and quite happy to see that when we showed up for the demo they were using the same B&W's I own for it, as I was expecting them to be using Linn speakers. It was pretty amazing comparing the previous version player to the new one. But it is a bit of money, so we will be considering other options...but this would solve 2 issues for me in getting a new source, plus getting rid of the weakest link in my system - the integrated that I'm using as a pre-amp right now.

Cheers, Al

Ok now I know who my audio consultants are going to be if I ever pull the trigger on streaming and DAC.

Hey, that phrase rings a bell!

I spent many hours in one of the best, serious audio stores in the country in the 1970s - Audio Consultants, in Evanston, IL. They were the first B&W retailer in the country, and early to feature Bryston and Magnepan, etc. Fond memories...

I bought my turntable and CM10's from them. Got a better deal on the Rotel gear from ABT. Will do headphones from Audio Consuntants. Great shop.

So Audio Consultants is still going strong with multiple stores. ABT has taken their game up and is an incredible place as well. They are a full line B&W dealer. (Speakers/Rotel/Classe) ..

Thanks @pitpro

I saw current website, and recognize at least two of the current employees from back in the '70s and '80s, one of whom I knew pretty well!

I bought plenty of components from them back in the day, and enjoyed the process thoroughly. Simon, the founder and owner of the store, was very smart to allow some of us to hang around as much as we did. Great word-of-mouth advertising.

I haven't been in an audio store for at least 30 years. Anything I buy is off e-bay or the HiFi forums. Except my Pi s used for streaming high resolution music, bought online. Anyone else doing this? I have ripped all my SACDs using a modified Playstation 3 and now they play from the server through the Pi USB connect to my DAC. Excellent quality and great ease of use.
