    hello everyone....

Just got this one set up...

Austrian Oak Wall Regulator, c. 1920, with 6 1/2-in. silvered astronomical type dial marked "Lehrwerkstatte Der Stat/Wien/Erich Mexera,"outer minutes ring and subsidiary seconds and hour dials within, eight-day time-only movement with deadbeat escapement, crutch beat adjustment, and maintaining power, with a brass-cased weight and regulated by a pendulum with wood rod and brass-faced bob, all in a rectangular oak case, ht. 32 1/2 in.

    Beautiful!

I had a similar nightmare experience with an online auction. Ended up well for me too, somehow.

Nice clock one thing we got in common we like just about any thing that tells time clocks and watches. Here is my only Regulator a Seth Thomas No.2 made around 1920. Yours is much nicer and interesting dial set up. Is it a 8 day movement ?

Interesting that four on that clock is IIII instead of IV.

That is really a cool clock. The dial face has tiny hairlines (or just the photo) - if so I guess it must be enamel?

    Hi

Not sure, auction house dates it to the 1920's...

    Hi
To level ( plumb ) the case from the wall ... It needs to be level side to side and front to back.

That is so the four and the six are not confused when someone is making a quick glance at the time. At least that is what my old watchmaker told me years ago. I'm not sure why they didn't do something similar with the nine and eleven.

For the 9 , would be a VIIII , might confuse with an 8 ?

    go figure

Some say the IIII helps divide the dial nicely into thirds. Some say that V - 1 equals 4. Elsewhere on the dial, (except for the IX) the priority is given to the larger number, followed by the smaller number (V+ I for six, V + II for 7, X + 1 for eleven, etc.). The clockmaker Joseph Knibb built clocks with what is called Roman striking. An odd striking pattern designed to preserve power, and lengthen the running time of his clocks. His clocks usually have the I V at the 4, rather than the IIII. The system used two bells - a lower pitched one, and a higher pitched one. One o’clock was a bing. Two o’clock was two bings. Three was three bings. Four was bing bong. Five was bong. Six was bong bing. Seven was bong bing bing. Eight was bong bing bing bing. Nine was bing bong bong. Ten was bong bong (as in two fives). Eleven was bong bong bing. Twelve was bong bong bing bing. The bongs represent the larger number, and the bings represent the 1. More than you likely wanted to know, I am sure. Speaking of bongs, my toke went out, typing this.
