If any watch collector newbie were to discover this post, let it be known that such false information abounds on the internet. It seems there is now a proliferation of such drivel all over the internet!

I have just read a blurb (AI) about care of vintage watches (pocket watches in particular) which indicates you should never “wind one tight”, or place it on a cold surface (marble, metal, or glass) because you will “draw residual heat from the mainspring”! What a lot of bunkum! OMG, artificial intelligence indeed!

Maybe false intelligence would be a better name for AI!

Believe it or not, but there are several sites that offer water proof or water resistant pocket watches! All quartz. No need to worry about overwinding them, or “losing residual heat from the mainspring by getting the watch cold”! How good can it get? Now, can I wear one of these when I mow the lawn? One thing I wouldn’t do is to lend one of these to @Duracuir1 because he’d use it for target practice! Or worse yet, wear it in his swimming pool, or in a kayak.

I think they're right, must have happened to this one. Owner picked it up from a cold wet surface and used pliers to wind it.

Actually, you can get hand wound pocket watches that I’m pretty sure you don’t have to worry about getting them wet, getting them cold, winding them, losing them, or even buying them in the first place.

Nor under the influence of herbal cigarettes, nitrous oxide or in fact any substance ingested for reasons of pure pleasure.
If the watch experience doesn't provide all the pleasure you need you're not doing it right.
